  • Patent number: 8183494
Abstract: In the method according to the invention for connecting a sheet metal component (3) to a component (5) consisting of cast metal, the sheet metal component (3) and the component (5) are welded to one another by means of a pulse-welding method. In particular, a sheet metal pipe (3) can thereby be welded to the port (12) of a housing (13) consisting of cast metal. This advantage may be utilized for an exhaust system with an exhaust manifold (3) and an exhaust assembly, such as a turbocharger (5).

  • Publication number: 20060279047
Abstract: The invention relates to a flange arrangement (2, 14, 25) of an engine cylinder head (22) and to a process for producing it. To simplify them as much as possible without losing the functionality of the flange arrangement (2, 14, 25), it is proposed that the flange arrangement (2, 14, 25) have at least two single-piece individual flanges (1a-d, 13a-c, 26), which bear against one another with in each case at least one peripheral region (8a-d, 15, 20, 28, 29) overlapping, in such a manner that in the overlapping area their securing bores (3, 16, 27) for attaching them to the cylinder head (22) are aligned.

  • Publication number: 20060013746
Abstract: The invention relates to an exhaust system comprising exhaust pipes, through which hot gas flows and which are connected on the inlet side to a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine, and comprising at least one catalyst support element, attached to at least one exhaust pipe. To make it possible to use a catalyst support element close to the engine without affecting the engine compartment with respect to the available space, it is proposed that the catalyst support element exhibits a cross section that is largely identical to that of the exhaust pipes and forms, as a replacement, at least one section of an exhaust pipe.

  • Publication number: 20050160600
Abstract: The invention concerns a method and apparatus for production of a hollow section (1) in which a coiled pre-shape of the hollow section (1) is deep drawn from a sheet part, which is pre-bent after a trimming process and coiled into the final shape of hollow section (1). The edges (45) of hollow section (1) lying in the peripheral direction are then joined together in the contact region. In order to improve the joining capability of hollow section (1) to other components in simple fashion, it is proposed that before the coiling process at least one flat site (35) for joining to another component be embossed before the coiling process in a pre-bent region of the hollow section (1).

  • Publication number: 20050028366
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing a branch pipe. In order for the dependable production of a branch pipe with virtually any desired design of the branch to be made possible in a simple way it is proposed that an elongate, straight main curvature and at least two lateral curvatures, respectively branching off from a longitudinal side of the main curvature, lying opposite each other with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the main curvature extending in the material of the blank and having a mirror-symmetrically arranged base line are formed from a blank by deep-drawing.

  • Patent number: 6776953
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the forming of a hollow body. The process includes providing a forming mold comprising an upper mold and a lower mold which form a mold cavity having a cross-sectional contour in a closed state of the forming mold. The upper mold includes a roller. The hollow body is placed between the upper mold and the lower mold in an area of the mold cavity. The hollow body is preprofiled by moving at least one of the upper mold and the lower mold into the closed state at which time the roller comes into frictional contact with a surface of the hollow body running at an acute angle with respect to a direction of the movement of the at least one upper mold and lower mold. The preprofiled hollow body is then formed into a final shape corresponding to the cross-sectional contour of the forming mold by applying a hydraulic internal pressure into the preprofiled hollow body and expanding the hollow body while the upper mild and the lower mold are in the closed state.

  • Patent number: 6327854
Abstract: An apparatus and method of attaching an exhaust manifold to an engine's cylinder head utilizing an oversized hole in the manifold, a stud fastener extending through the oversized hole, a spacer element around the stud fastener, and a nut adapted to be tightened to engage the spacer element and the flange wherein a flat gasket is compressed to a desired extent which is not so excessive that it inhibits sliding movement caused by thermal growth of the manifold.

  • Patent number: 6038769
Abstract: A method for manufacturing an air-gap-insulated exhaust manifold, including exhaust-conducting inner tube sections and an outer shell divided into an upper shell and a lower shell, with the inner tube sections, of which at least one is designed as a curved tube, being plugged into one another. The inner tube sections plugged into one another are inserted as an assembled component into the lower shell, centered relative to the outer shell that is formed later, with the upper shell then being placed on the lower shell and pressed against the latter. Then the upper and lower shells and the inner tube sections are welded to the outer shell at those points at which they pass through the outer shell.

  • Patent number: 5784882
Abstract: An exhaust manifold for conducting exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine including a collection pipe structure having branches with engine flanges at their ends for mounting to cylinder outlet ports of the engine and an outlet flange at the downstream end of the pipe structure for connection to an exhaust pipe. The collection pipe structure has in the area of the branches a cross-section with different diameters for first and second cross-sectional directions which are normal to each other so as to form a drop-like or oval cross-sectional area which, in a downstream direction, continuously changes until the two diameters are equal providing for a circular shape at the end of the collection pipe structure adjacent the outlet flange.
