  • Publication number: 20060276317
Abstract: A heatable and/or coolable roll, i.e. a thermo roll, of a fibrous web machine for the treatment of a fibrous web, is, for example, for pressing and/or calendering the fibrous web in contact, i.e. in a nip, between the thermo roll and a backing member which is in contact with the thermo roll or for drying or cooling the fibrous web on the shell surface of the thermo roll. A semi-finished product of a thermo roll is manufactured using a thermo roll.

  • Patent number: 6886454
Abstract: Higher-gloss paper grades, in particular paper grades with a Hunter gloss % above 40, are produced in an arrangement having pairs of calendering units (1, 3) disposed in the machine direction one after the other and apart from one another, which pairs are each formed of separate and different calendering units (1, 3) and in each of which the nip load in the latter calendering unit (3) is higher than the nip load in the preceding calendering unit (1). Advantageously, the calendering unit (1) placed first in the machine direction is an on-line long-nip calendering unit (1) and the calendering unit (3) placed after that in the machine direction is an on-line or off-line supercalender.

  • Patent number: 6790316
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for positioning a shoe of a shoe press/shoe clender in a paper machine. In the method, the position of the shoe (11) of the shoe calender/shoe press is measured and, based on the results of the measurement, the position of the shoe is controlled so as to be as desired in the direction of nip compression. The invention also relates to an arrangment for positioning a shoe of a shoe press/shoe calender in a paper machine, which arrangment comprises a shoe roll (10) or equivalent which includes a shoe (11) and hydraulic cylinders (12) connected thereto for moving the shoe (11). The arrangement comprises further at least two measuring devices (15) for measuring the position of the shoe (11) and means (12) for controlling the position of the shoe (11) based the results obtained by means of the measuring devices so as to be as desired in the direction of nip compression.

  • Patent number: 6758136
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for operating a calender, comprising a cylindrical heated roll and a flexible belt surrounding a stationary support beam which supports at least one actuator which may urge a concave load shoe against the heated roll by the flexible belt to form an extended and heated nip through which a fiber web passes to be calendered and a separating mechanism for having at least one of the rolls movable into and away from the nip characterized in that the flexible belt is a flexible tubular jacket which forms a part of an enclosed shoe roll such that the ends of the jacket have end walls mounted thereto, which end walls are rotatably mounted in relation to the support beam, and in that at least one of the end walls is driven by a drive arrangement which drive arrangement may be activated to drive the end walls and thereby also the jacket independently of its position in relation to the fiber web or the heated roll.

  • Publication number: 20040078207
Abstract: A calender for paper or paperboard is sold together with a guarantee and preventative maintenance plan. The sales plan incorporates a warranty period of 3 to 5 years with a scheduled maintenance plan which is performed or overseen by the supplier of the calender. The scheduled maintenance is related to the warranty such that if the scheduled maintenance is not performed, the warranty is voided. The scheduled maintenance also allows the calender supplier to monitor the use of the calender and to inform the purchaser when it is evident that the calender is being misused. This method of sale of a calender and calender warranty minimizes unscheduled maintenance, and damage through improper operation.

  • Patent number: 6712938
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for calendering a moving web (1) of paper or board. The web (1) is passed to a calender (2) and calendered therein. At least one quality of the calendered web (1) is measured at a first measurement point (3) adapted at a location downstream from the calender (2). Additionally, at least one quality of the web (1) entering the calender (2) is measured at a second measurement point (4) adapted at a location between the calender (2) and the preceding section of the line. A control variable (6) affecting the calendering effect on the calender (2) is controlled by a feedback control scheme based on the measurement result obtained from said first measurement point (3) and a control variable (9) affecting the processability of the web (1) to be calendered is controlled by a feedback control scheme based on the measurement result obtained from said second measurement point (4).

  • Patent number: 6481275
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for measuring the tension of a moving web. In the invention, a measuring beam (2)is curved so that a web moving over or under the measuring beam (2) forms an air cushion (3) of the air it transports between the measuring beam (2) and the web (1). The web (1) causes a force effect transmitted by the air cushion on the measuring beam (2). The tension of the web (1) is measured by measuring the force caused by the web (1) and transmitted by the measuring beam (2).
