  • Patent number: 8528329
Abstract: A method for controlling emissions during low-load diesel engine operation is provided. The engine includes at least one piston movable in a cylinder between a top dead center and a bottom dead center position, a fuel injector for injecting fuel into the cylinder, and a variable geometry turbine through which exhaust from the engine is adapted to flow. According to the method, the engine is operated at low load, NOx emissions are measured at an exhaust of the engine, and a variable geometry turbine inlet opening size is controlled responsive to NOx emissions measurements so that NOx emission levels are controlled.

  • Patent number: 7007644
Abstract: A valve actuation system and method for use in an internal combustion engine including at least one combustion cylinder having a piston and an engine valve. The valve actuation system includes a hydraulic pump, a high-pressure reservoir, and an electro-hydraulic valve actuator. The hydraulic pump is configured to produce a hydraulic output based on a valve-piston clearance profile of at least one cylinder of the combustion engine. The high-pressure reservoir is coupled with the hydraulic pump. The electro-hydraulic valve actuator is coupled with the high-pressure reservoir via a first control valve and configured to actuate at least one engine valve of the combustion engine according to an output of the hydraulic pump.

  • Publication number: 20050139175
Abstract: A turbo-charged internal combustion cylinder assembly includes a combustion chamber which may be communicably connected to a compressor via an intake port through an intake manifold and aftercooler so the compressor may provide pre-combustion gases to the combustion chamber when the intake valve is open. An exhaust port communicably connects the combustion chamber to an exhaust manifold. An exhaust valve may open to exhaust post-combustion gases to the exhaust manifold while an intake valve is substantially closed, and the exhaust valve may open to admit post-combustion gases to the combustion chamber while the intake valve is substantially open and an exhaust port pressure in the exhaust port is higher than a combustion chamber pressure in the combustion chamber. A fuel injector may admit fuel to the combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 6848413
Abstract: An internal combustion cylinder assembly includes a cylinder having a combustion chamber and a piston. An intake valve provides a working fluid to the combustion chamber while the piston moves from a top dead center position to a bottom dead center position. A pre-combustion chamber is connected communicably to the combustion chamber via a Suder valve and conveys a portion of the working fluid to the pre-combustion chamber while the Suder valve is substantially open. The Suder valve may open substantially simultaneously with the intake valve, remain substantially open while the piston moves from the top dead center position to the bottom dead center position during an intake stroke, and close substantially while the piston is returning to the top dead center position during a compression stroke.

  • Patent number: 6336447
Abstract: An engine exhaust braking method and apparatus bypasses intake air around the intercooler from the turbocharger while simultaneously injecting a minimum amount or greater of fuel per stroke into an engine cylinder during engine brake operation. The minimum amount of fuel is determined such that it is the smallest amount of fuel which will fully combust when the engine is operating at a particular speed. The apparatus includes a combustion engine, a turbocharger, an intercooler, and a compression release braking system. The compression release braking system includes an engine or vehicle electronic control unit, a compression release brake controller, a fuel injector, and an intercooler bypass assembly, wherein while the engine brake is engaged, a small amount of fuel is injected into the cylinders during the compression stroke, and engine intake air is bypassed around the intercooler from the turbocharger and directly into the engine.
