  • Patent number: 8746382
Abstract: A method of priming a common bus of a machine having an engine, a generator and an auxiliary power source is provided. The method may determine an operational state of the auxiliary power source, operate the engine at a predetermined idle speed if the auxiliary power source is determined to be inoperative, and enable the generator to regulate the common bus in response to the predetermined idle speed of the engine.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 23, 2010
Date of Patent: June 10, 2014
    Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.
Inventors: Jackson Wai, Thuong Le, Timothy Goldammer
  • Patent number: 8610382
Abstract: A method of actively discharging a common bus (116) of a machine (100) having an engine (102), a generator (112), a traction motor (124) and one or more auxiliary devices (126) is provided. The method may monitor a speed of the engine (102) with respect to a first threshold, monitor a voltage of the common bus (116) with respect to a second threshold, and enable one or more of the generator (112), the motor (124) and the auxiliary devices (126) if the engine speed falls below the first threshold and the voltage exceeds the second threshold so as to discharge voltage from the common bus (116).

  • Publication number: 20120161452
Abstract: A method of priming a common bus (114) of a machine (100) having an engine (102), a generator (110) and an auxiliary power source (126) is provided. The method may determine an operational state of the auxiliary power source (126), operate the engine (102) at a predetermined idle speed if the auxiliary power source (126) is determined to be inoperative, and enable the generator (110) to regulate the common bus (114) in response to the predetermined idle speed of the engine (102).

  • Publication number: 20070210582
Abstract: A machine includes an electrical power source, which may include a mechanical power source and an electric generator drivingly connected to the mechanical power source. The machine may also include one or more power loads connected to the electric generator. Additionally, the machine may include power-supply controls, which may be configured to execute a control method. The control method may include receiving inputs relating to conditions of operation of the machine. Additionally, the control method may include controlling the speed at which the mechanical power source drives the electric generator, and the power consumption of one or more of the power loads connected to the electric generator, interdependently.

  • Publication number: 20070023210
Abstract: A mobile machine includes a propulsion system configured to propel the mobile machine. The mobile machine may also include an electrical system mounted to the machine. The electrical system may include a first power source, a second power source, a power-transmission system connected to one or more power loads, and power-supply controls. The power-supply controls may be configured to execute a control method, including executing a power-source transition. Executing the power-source transition may include disconnecting the first power source from the power-transmission system, waiting for satisfaction of at least one predetermined condition, and connecting the second power source to the power-transmission system.

  • Publication number: 20070005205
Abstract: A method for operating an electrical system for a machine is provided. The electrical system may include at least one power source connected to a power-distribution network. The power-distribution network may include a first portion with one or more power loads connected thereto and a second portion with one or more power loads connected thereto. The method may include repeatedly executing a load-priority cycle including operating in a first load-priority mode and subsequently operating in a second load-priority mode, during a power deficit. Operating in the first load-priority mode may include supplying power to the first and second portions of the power-distribution network, with a priority on supplying power to the first portion. Operating in the second load-priority mode may include supplying power to the first and second portions of the power-distribution network, with a priority on supplying power to the second portion.
