Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for processing local area network diagnostic data obtained in respect of a local area network. The method includes calculating a value for each of a plurality of data units according to a predetermined function of one or more field-values stored in the data unit; identifying a first and second data unit as being similar in dependence on a comparison of their respective values, the second data unit having at least one field-value which differs from a corresponding field-value of the first data unit; in response to such an identification, creating a third data unit containing a field-value indicative of the first data unit and an indication of the at least one field-value which differs from the corresponding field-value in the first data unit; and sending the first and third data units for performance analysis at a remote network diagnostic device outside the LAN.

Abstract: There is disclosed a method of processing a data packet received by a packet sniffer, the packet containing an associated identifier, the method including transmitting the packet to a recipient, determining if the identifier corresponds to a particular network, wherein if the identifier is determined to correspond to the particular network, the identifier is provided to the recipient; and if the identifier is determined to not correspond to the particular network, the identifier is withheld from the recipient.

Abstract: In hybrid access broadband systems, bandwidth provided via a Digital Subscriber Line or cable broadband link is supplemented with bandwidth provided by a Long Term Evolution cellular data link. A user device having both wireless local area network and LTE network access is used to simulate an LTE modem. The performance of a data connection to the LTE network and a home gateway via a WLAN is measured at various locations within the user premises. The results are processed to determine the hybrid access benefit provided at the various locations and a recommended location for installation of the LTE modem is determined for the user premises.

Abstract: A method for determining a location of a mobile apparatus based on the presence of wireless access point signals. The received wireless signal strength from a plurality of observed wireless access points is compared with profiles each relevant to a different user context and containing a plurality of previously registered wireless access point signal strengths around a previously registered location. The location of the mobile apparatus is determined based on the profile most closely matching the collection of observed wireless access points. Wireless access points present in the profile but not observed are ignoring during the matching process.

Abstract: A system for synchronizing application programs which together provide a multi-modal user interface, which comprises multiple application programs which provide the various interface of the multi-modal interface and which are in communication with a synchronization manager. Means are provided to detect status changes in the application programs and to communicate such status changes, in the form of data updates to the synchronization manager. The synchronization manager is operative to communicate such a data update to the application program in which the data update did not originate so that the application programs are synchronized.
