Abstract: A bone graft substitute for use in orthopedic bone grafting procedures comprising a radiolucent bone graft substitute combined with a temporary radiopaque agent. Methods of making and using the composition are also disclosed. Bone graft substitutes have become an effective means of regenerating bone in orthopedic procedures where bone loss results from surgically created defects or traumatic injury to the bone. Bone graft substitutes include mineral-based materials such as hydroxyapatite, calcium phosphates, and calcium phosphosilicates as well as allograft-derived materials and xenograft-derived materials such as collagen-based matrices and demineralized bone matrices.

  • Publication number: 20150284587
Abstract: The present invention is directed to polymeric coating formulations in which addition of an antimicrobial to a solution, containing solvent and polymer, significantly alters polymer entanglements. Benefits include alternative routes to, and customization of the polymer's degradation pathways. The dramatic entanglement changes also provide manufacturing advantages such as ease of stirring, pumping, and spraying. Furthermore, the coatings may have faster drying times, less shrinkage, more complete fill, and a more even coat for a given thickness. Methodology for production of coating formulations of the desired properties and their use to provide antimicrobial coatings is also described.

  • Publication number: 20150031772
Abstract: A coating comprised of a polymeric material and a bioactive agent where the properties of the casting solvent dictate the dispersion of the embedding bioactive agent. In preferred embodiments, controlled release of the bioactive agent is achieved by homogeneous dispersion of the bioactive agent within the coating. A further aspect of the invention is directed to formulations where the heterogeneous dispersion of the bioactive agent provides an initial rapid release of the bioactive agent. Methodology for production of coating formulations of the desired properties and the application of the coating to an article are also described.

  • Publication number: 20060255235
Abstract: A method of making a container preform includes providing a mold core having at least one surface recess in the form of negative-mold indicia, and molding a preform around the core such that the preform has internal raised indicia formed by the at least one recess in the core. The preform preferably subsequently is blow-molded to form a container having the raised indicia on an inside surface of the container. This raised indicia on the inside surface of the container may be viewed from outside of the container to confirm that the container is genuine. In accordance with various embodiments of the disclosure, the raised internal indicia may be on the bottom wall, sidewall, shoulder and/or neck of the container.

  • Patent number: 6390237
Abstract: A step stool or ladder has a first frame member and a second frame member. The second frame member folds to a position within the confines of the first frame member to provide a thin, easily stored ladder for use within a household. The first frame member includes a safety hoop at which the user can easily grab while on the step or rung of the ladder or step stool. The frame also includes a cross member which spans a portion of one of the frame members. The ladder or step stool has one or more steps. At least one of the steps is supported primarily by the cross member in its unfolded position in which a user can ascend on the steps of the stool or ladder. One or more other steps may be attached to step which is primarily supported by the cross member. The step that is primarily supported by the cross member includes a latch that has a first curved end which engages the cross member to prevent the step primarily supported by the cross member from disengaging the cross member.

  • Patent number: 5772901
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for separating a water/organic/solid emulsion, wherein the solid comprises particles having a length of about 50 .mu.m or less, are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of (1) directing the water/organic/solid emulsion from an emulsion source through a first hydrocyclone; (2) inverting the phase of the overflow emulsion from the first hydrocyclone; (3) directing the overflow emulsion through one or more subsequent hydrocyclones arranged in series; and (4) collecting the aqueous phase and the organic phase. The solid can be a biocatalyst, such as an intact bacterial, fungal or yeast cell. The organic phase is a liquid material substantially comprising carbon, which is substantially immiscible with water, such as petroleum.
