  • Patent number: 10675076
Abstract: A device and method for treating bone fractures/lesions using an inflatable body is provided. The inflatable body includes a balloon having a substantially flat horizontal surface for quick easy insertion into bone beneath the fracture so as to align misaligned fragments of the fracture and/or to collapsed bone. The body has a shape and size to compress at least a portion of the cancellous bone to form a cavity in the cancellous bone and/or to restore the original position of the outer cortical bone, if fractured or collapsed. The inflatable body has a stylet attached to it's distal end so that once the inflatable body is deflated it can be twisted about the stylet to have a smaller profile so as to be easily withdrawn from the bone.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 13, 2017
Date of Patent: June 9, 2020
    Assignee: Medtronic Holding Company Sárl
Inventors: Masoumeh Mafi, Bryan J. Auyoung, Todd W. Jenkins, Warren C. Sapida

  • Patent number: 9198684
Abstract: A cutting device includes an elongated shaft that extends between a proximal end and a distal end. A distal arm extends from the distal end of the elongated shaft. The distal arm includes an inner surface defining a cavity and an outer surface defining a blunt tip. At least one proximal arm extends from the distal end of the elongated shaft at a position proximal to the distal arm. The at least one proximal arm has an inner surface defining a cavity including a cutting portion configured to cut tissue.

  • Patent number: 8262609
Abstract: An inflatable bone tamp for performing a minimally invasive surgical procedure includes an inflatable structure that exhibits an outwardly tapering expansion profile. The outward taper can beneficially allow the inflatable bone tamp to exert greater targeted force in difficult environments. For example, in a vertebra with a compression fracture, the outwardly tapering expansion profile of the inflatable bone tamp can result in greater lifting force being applied to the endplates of the vertebra, thereby increasing the likelihood of restoring the height lost due to the compression fracture.

  • Patent number: 8221349
Abstract: An inflatable bone tamp for performing a minimally invasive surgical procedure includes an inflatable structure having at least three contiguous lobes, that when inflated, cause the inflatable structure to exhibits an outwardly tapering expansion profile. By forming the inflatable structure such that the reduced-diameter junction(s) between the lobes has a greater wall thickness then the adjacent lobes, the durability and abrasion-resistance of the inflatable bone tamp can be increased.
