  • Patent number: 6024499
Abstract: Disclosed is an optical fiber connector for ultra high-speed communication which can be produced by easy machining procedures and which enables stable and efficient transmission. The connector comprises a columnar ferrule having a through hole in which a connection end portion of an optical fiber is retained, a tapered portion serving as a connection guide and assuming a conical face formed at the and of the ferrule, and a convex spherical face formed at the end of the tapered portion. An intersection of the convex spherical face and the axis of the ferrule forms a reference abutment point. A straight line passing through this reference abutment point and angled with respect to the ferrule axis forms a reference normal intersecting orthogonal to the convex spherical face.

  • Patent number: 5845029
Abstract: An optical fiber connector comprises a first tubular body having a passageway extending generally longitudinally therethrough for receiving an optical fiber, a first end for connection to an adaptor and being polished into a tilted convex surface, and a second end. A second tubular body has a passageway extending generally longitudinally therethrough in substantial coaxial alignment with the passageway of the first tubular body for receiving the second end of the first tubular body. A positioning device integral with the second tubular body is provided for positioning a tilt direction of the tilted convex surface of the first tubular body in a predetermined registered position when the first end of the first tubular body is connected to the adaptor.

  • Patent number: 5559916
Abstract: The end face of an optical fiber assembly consisting of an optical fiber s and a ferrule f is polished to form a conical surface with oblique faces Fp1 and Fp2 such that, central axis Ap of the conical surface makes an inclination of 8.degree. with respect to the optical axis L of the optical fiber s, top Ft of the conical surface coincides with the optical axis L of the optical fiber s, and has a taper angle of 2.degree.. Thereafter, the optical fiber assembly is further polished to form an oblique convex spherical surface at the end face such that, the central axis of the oblique convex spherical surface makes an inclination of 8.degree. with respect to the optical axis L of the optical fiber s. Due to this, insertion loss and light reflected back to the source is stabilized and minimized.

  • Patent number: 5463709
Abstract: End face of a ferrule 100 is polished to form a conical surface 3 such that, central axis Ap of said conical surface 3 makes an inclination of 8.degree. with respect to central axis L of optical fiber insertion hole 4, top 3t of said conical surface 3 coincides with said central axis L and has a taper angle of 2.degree.. Because of this, while polishing an end of a optical fiber inserted and fixed inside said optical fiber insertion hole 4, a well balanced oblique spherical surface can be formed and the non-coincidence of the center of said oblique convex surface with the point where said oblique convex surface intersect with the optical axis of said optical fiber can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 5461689
Abstract: A holding member holding an optical connector is set in a rotary member such that the optical axis of the optical connector is at a predetermined inclination angle to the axis of rotation of the rotary member. An end face of the optical connector is then brought into contact with a polishing member. Then, the rotary member and polishing member are driven for rotation by drive means to polish the end face of the optical connector into an inclined convex spherical surface.

  • Patent number: 5458531
Abstract: An optical connector tip polisher which comprises a stationary block for supporting a wheel spindle stock, a manual slider for supporting an optical connector and a cam mechanism. The stationary block has a base for mounting the wheel spindle. The base has a guide space and a guide opening. The manual slider has a horizontal stock, a post and is a holder. The horizontal stock is fitted in the guide space of the base and restricted against movement in the vertical direction while being movable along a horizontal plane. The post is embedded in the horizontal stock and is movable in unison therewith. The post extends upright through the guide opening of the base. An idling wheel is provided between the inner periphery of the guide opening and the outer periphery of the post to guide the post along the inner periphery. The holder is secured to the post at an intermediate position thereof and holds an optical connector to perpendicularly press the tip of the optical connector against the wheel spindle stock.
