  • Patent number: 5425249
Abstract: A bottom feed accumulator canister for an automotive air conditioning system includes a novel means to prevent drain down when the system compressor is off. A valve chamber located at the bottom of, and to one side of, the accumulator return tube surrounds a small bleed orifice through the tube. A valve seat in the valve chamber holds a weight that is sufficiently massive to block the valve seat against liquid ingress when the compressor is off. When the compressor is on, the suction at the bottom of the return tube is also seen in the valve chamber, lifting the weight so that liquid can be drawn into the tube through the small orifice.
