  • Patent number: 5222843
Abstract: A polygonal, lay down indexable cutting insert for eight feed and light depth of cut application. The insert has intermittent seating pads, chipbreaker pads, and stabilizer pads and is configured to allow coolant to be circulated across the body of the insert during cutting operations.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 22, 1992
Date of Patent: June 29, 1993
    Assignee: Valenite Inc.

  • Patent number: 5207748
Abstract: An indexable improved force distribution cutting insert having a tapered cutting edge along its periphery with the greatest height at each corner of the insert and descending bi-directionally toward the centerline of the insert to define a resultant ridge to improve impact resistance at each corner.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 12, 1991
Date of Patent: May 4, 1993
    Assignee: Valenite Inc.
Inventors: Karl Katbi, Thomas J. Bernadic, Tony M. Lowe, Brendon L. Brockett
  • Patent number: 5203649
Abstract: An indexable improved force distribution cutting insert having an arcuate concave convex cutting edge and a body portion having an arcuate concave convex configuration corresponding to the cutting edge.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 7, 1991
Date of Patent: April 20, 1993
    Assignee: GTE Valentine Corporation
Inventors: Karl Katbi, Thomas J. Bernadic, Tony M. Lowe, Brendon L. Brockett
  • Patent number: 5147159
Abstract: Chip control insert having parallel face central aperture diamond configuration, cutting edges extending above a planar recess, annular and discrete corner island locating surfaces, each with radially outward pointed chip breaking projections extending from the annular locating surface toward the center of each cutting edge and from each of the islands toward its respective acute and obtuse corner. Islands at the acute corners are larger than islands at the obtuse corners.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 24, 1990
Date of Patent: September 15, 1992
    Assignee: GTE Valenite Corporation
Inventors: Tony M. Lowe, Yefim Val
  • Patent number: 4963061
Abstract: In a ceramic indexable cutting insert, an edge strengthening land extends rearwardly of a beveled cutting edge at an angle of from about 80 to about 100 degrees with respect to the peripheral side surface, and a grooved recess extents rearwardly and along the edge strengthening land to direct chips upwardly and outwardly away from the insert and the cutting edge. In one embodiment of the present invention intended for conditions of heavy depth of cut, enhanced edge strength is sacrificed and an edge strengthened land is not provided.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 7, 1989
Date of Patent: October 16, 1990
    Assignee: GTE Valenite Corporation
Inventors: Karl Katbi, John H. Patterson, Tony M. Lowe, Yefim Val, Thomas J. Bernadic, Brendan L. Brockett
  • Patent number: 4859122
Abstract: A polygonal indexable cutting insert has a chip breaker with a backwall having a main portion spaced from the cutting edge and including a plurality lands as to deflect chips in a direction toward the center of the insert.
    Type: Grant
