The holding device includes an elongated hanger having a clamping mechanism for releasable clamping of the microscope slides at their upper ends and for retaining the microscope slides in a hanging position with the surfaces of the microscope slides in said a common plane. The clamping mechanism preferably is arranged to cooperate with a loading rack having a supporting surface for support of the microscope slides in the common plane, the hanger being able to be introduced into the rack and the clamping mechanism being able to be actuated so that all microscope slides placed on the supporting surface are clamped in the holding device.
