  • Publication number: 20100183404
Abstract: A method for establishing a nail connection between two components and a nail for this purpose are described. The nail 6 is driven through the non-preholed components in the joint area at a high speed such that the nail point completely penetrates both components and a material collar, which extends into an adhesive layer between the two components, is only formed in the to driving direction in the nail-head-side component.

  • Patent number: 7721405
Abstract: In a method for joining at least two plate-shaped workpieces by a fastening tool and a device for operating the fastening tool, the fastening tool comprises a punch for exerting a punch force to perform a joining operation and a clamp for exerting a clamping force upon the workpieces at the joining area. During the joining operation the punch exerts a high punch force to perform the joining operation and the clamp exerts substantially no clamping force to allow for free material deformation in the joining area. After the joining operation both the punch and the clamp exert high forces at the same time to reduce any material deformations of the workpieces and to provide for compression of the workpieces in the joining area. Preferably the invention is used in a riveting tool for setting self-piercing rivets; as an alternative it may be used in a clinching tool.

  • Publication number: 20080222873
Abstract: A method is described for establishing a nail connection between two components as well as a nail therefor. The nail is driven through the non-prepunched components in the joining area at a high speed such that the nail tip fully penetrates both components and forms a toric-shaped material bulge in the nail-head-side component, which protrudes into a circular groove of the nail head, and a crater-shaped material bulge is formed in the component facing away from the nail head, which protrudes in the opposite direction.

  • Publication number: 20060213954
Abstract: A method for joining at least two workpieces in abutment to each other by a joining element. The joining element 6 is driven so as to perform rotational and translational movements in order to be moved through the upper workpiece 2 and into the lower workpiece 4 without full penetration of the lower workpiece in order to provide for an integral one-piece joint between the joining element and the lower workpiece due to friction as a result of said rotational and translational movements. The joining process will result further in a joint between the joining element and the upper workpiece which is mainly a positively interlocking and/or friction joint. The workpieces remain in engagement to each other and are being interconnected. The method enables to join workpieces 2, 4 not only of similar but also of different materials such as aluminium/steel or plastic material/metal. Generally it is sufficient that the joining area is accessible only from one side.
