  • Patent number: 8486488
Abstract: A web of a polymer film (1) is coated with an oxide layer, in particular with an SiOx barrier layer, by transporting the web with the aid of a rotatable drum (12) through a plurality of flame bands, which are directed in a radial direction from above against the circumferential surface of the drum, which extend at a distance from each other across the width of the web being supported and transported on this circumferential surface, and which are fed with a gas mixture including a combustible gas, an oxidant, and a silicon containing compound. Therein the circumferential surface of the rotatable drum is cooled to a predetermined temperature and the web is transported through the area of the tip of the inner flame region. Polymer films with barrier layers produced in the named way have at small layer thicknesses of less than 10 nm very good barrier properties.

  • Patent number: 7476428
Abstract: A gas barrier packaging laminate having durability to stress crack formation and yet a bending stiffness and good integrity between the laminate layers, includes outer layers of heat-sealable polyolefin, two polymer carrier layers each being coated with a SiOx gas barrier layer, and an intermediate polymer layer that includes at least first and second part-layers. The first part-layer has a higher stiffness than the second part-layer, and the second part-layer has higher elastomeric properties than the first part-layer. A stiff structural sandwich construction is formed by the two stiff carrier layers separated by the intermediate layer that is also shock absorbing to prevent stress-cracking of the SiOx layers. A packaging container manufactured from the packaging laminate and a method of manufacturing of the packaging laminate are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7459214
Abstract: A binder for a packaging laminate, which binder comprises a polyolefin grafted with an unsaturated alkoxysilane. According to the invention, the grafted polyolefin is blended with a non-grafted polyolefin, in said binder, whereby the flexibility of the binder is improved, which in turn provides for an increased number of adhesion points when the binder is used in a binding layer in the packaging laminate. The invention also relates to packaging laminate (10, 30, 40, 50) comprising the binder and to a packaging container (60) formed form the packaging laminate.

Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance S.A.
    Inventors: Torsten Olofsson, Bertrand Jaccoud
  • Patent number: 7122234
Abstract: The invention relates to a transparent gas barrier packaging laminate having a required bending stiffness, comprising outer layers of heat-sealable polyolefin, two polymer carrier layers each being coated with a SiOx gas barrier layer, wherein the two polymer carrier layers with SiOx layers are laminated to each other by means of an intermediate polymer layer, which in comparison to the other surrounding layers is relatively stiff and thicker. The required stiffness of the packaging laminate is obtained by the I-beam interaction between the two carrier layers and the intermediate distancing polymer layer. Preferably, the thickness of the intermediate polymer layer constitutes from about 30 to about 55% of the total thickness of the packaging laminate. The invention also relates to a packaging container such as a pouch or similar manufactured from the packaging laminate and to a method of manufacturing of the packaging laminate.
