Publication number: 20130088530Abstract: In a method of driving a liquid crystal panel, an overshoot signal is applied to the liquid crystal panel to display images on the liquid crystal panel. An overshoot level C is selected from a plurality of overshoot levels Dn. In this selecting, difference values between momentary values of a response waveform gn and momentary values of an ideal waveform f are obtained and added for a predetermined period and a minimum first error value E1 is obtained. One of the overshoot levels Dn corresponding to the response waveform gn having the minimum first error value E1 is selected as the overshoot level C. One of the overshoot levels Dn is selected by using an average value from the values obtained for the predetermined period similarly to humans' recognition of the liquid crystal display element. Accordingly, tailing or an image failure is less likely to occur.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2011Publication date: April 11, 2013Applicant: SHARP KABUSHIKI KAISHAInventors: Mitsuhiro Shigeta, Nobuo Okano, Toshihisa Uchida, Yukio Yoshida, Kazuya Nakahata

Publication number: 20130076608Abstract: A method of driving a liquid crystal panel includes setting a gradation voltage corresponding to each gradation level with using a setting gamma function, and selecting the gradation voltage from a group of gradation voltages corresponding to a gradation level of the signal with using a selecting gamma function. A gamma value of the setting gamma function is different from a gamma value of the selecting gamma function. According to the driving method, if the gradation voltage that easily causes tailing or an image failure and the gradation voltage that hardly causes tailing or an image failure are applied to the display according to the gradation level of the input data signal, the gamma value of the setting gamma function is adjusted and unevenness is less likely to be caused by the gradation voltage. Accordingly, tailing or an image failure is less likely to occur.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2011Publication date: March 28, 2013Applicant: SHARP KABUSHIKI KAISHAInventors: Mitsuhiro Shigeta, Toshihisa Uchida

Publication number: 20120119981Abstract: In a display panel driving apparatus which generates gray scales corresponding to first through nth sub-frames into which one frame is divided, and drives a display panel based on the gray scales thus generated, in a rising response in which a gray scale of a previous frame is Tf and a gray scale of a subsequent frame is Tr, T1 and T2 satisfy inequalities (i) T1?Tf, (ii) T2?Tr, and (iii) T1?Tf<T2?T1, where T1 is a gray scale generated so as to correspond to a first sub-frame of the subsequent frame, and T2 is a gray scale generated so as to correspond to any one of a second through nth sub-frames of the subsequent frame. This thus provides a display panel driving apparatus capable of reducing jaggy at an edge of a moving image on a display panel.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 15, 2007Publication date: May 17, 2012Applicant: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Makoto SHIOMI, Toshihisa UCHIDA

Patent number: 7924298Abstract: A modulation processing section compares video data of a current frame and a previous frame representative value supplied from a frame memory, corrects the video data so that a gradation transition from a gradation indicated by the previous frame representative value to a gradation indicated by the video data is emphasized, and outputs the corrected video data. A judgment section compares both of the data and judges, out of a value calculated from the previous frame representative value by a representative value generating section and the video data, which is to be stored in the frame memory till a next frame begins. This allows for realizing a liquid crystal display device capable of preventing with a relatively small-scale circuit (alternatively, a relatively small amount of calculation) a phenomenon such that: although a response speed of a pixel is improved, the emphasis modulation and a response delay of the pixel are combined so that image quality in displaying moving images deteriorates.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2005Date of Patent: April 12, 2011Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Toshihisa Uchida, Makoto Shiomi, Kazunari Tomizawa

Publication number: 20080062163Abstract: A modulation unit is disclosed which compares video data on a current frame to a representative value of the preceding frame from a frame memory and corrects the video data so as to emphasize the gradation transition from the gradation indicated by the representative value of the preceding frame to the gradation indicated by the video data when outputting the video data. Furthermore, a judgment unit compares the both data and judges which of the value calculated from the frame representative value by the representative value generation unit and the video data is to be stored in the frame memory until the next frame. Thus, it is possible to realize a liquid crystal display device having a comparatively small circuit size (or calculation amount) for suppressing the phenomenon of image quality lowering upon display of a moving picture caused by the synergistic effect between the emphasis modulation and the pixel response shortage even when the pixel response speed is increased.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 1, 2005Publication date: March 13, 2008Inventors: Toshihisa Uchida, Makoto Shiomi, Kazunari Tomizawa
