  • Patent number: 8808217
Abstract: A method and apparatus for collecting plasma reduced platelets potentially suspended in a synthetic solution from a donor. Whole blood is drawn from the donor and introduced into a separation chamber. Platelets are extracted from the separation chamber into a container, using, for example, surge (with anticoagulated plasma or a synthetic solution) or push methodologies. The remaining blood components in the separation chamber are returned back to the donor. The steps of drawing whole blood and introducing the whole blood into the separation chamber, extracting platelets from the separation chamber into the container, and returning the remaining components in the chamber back to the donor are repeated. The sequestered platelets in the container are reintroduced into the separation chamber, whereupon a plasma reduced platelet product is extracted.

  • Patent number: 5882289
Abstract: A centrifuge bowl suitable for separating blood components, in particular concentrated red blood cells. A centrifuge bowl 10 comprises a core 14 having an annular portion 50A and a cylindrical outer wall 50. Annular portion 50A has a thick wall for minimizing the holdup volume of blood components within a collection chamber CC and the radially inner wall of the annular portion is disposed radially closely adjacent to the opening defined by skirts 24a, 25a. The outer wall 50 defines a separation chamber SC with bowl body 12 and its upper tapered portion defines a separation region S. Three slit-like openings 52 are formed at the junction between outer wall 50 and annular portion 50A, thereby prevent back flow while permitting flow of blood components from separation chamber SC to collection chamber CC.

  • Patent number: 5221355
Abstract: An apparatus for forming a high purity silicon carbide film on the inner surface of a cylindrical member by a chemical vapor phase deposition process is provided. The member to be coated is received in a reaction vessel and heated by a heating means. The apparatus includes a gas feed conduit having a distal end disposed for axial motion within the member, for feeding a source gas containing a carbon source and a silicon source into the interior of the member, and a gas discharge conduit having a distal end disposed for axial motion within the member, for discharging used reaction gases from within the member. The gas feed and discharge conduits are moved so that their distal ends move through the member in unison to continuously move the reaction region.
