  • Patent number: 6501878
Abstract: The invention relates to an optical fiber and a fiber termination which provide an output of laser light propagating through the fiber in a required direction while focusing it into a small spot. In one embodiment of the invention the termination includes a tapered fiber rod with an angled ball formed at the end of the rod. A corresponding method of manufacturing of the termination is provided. In another embodiment the termination includes a fiber rod having an angled end and a GRIN lens disposed so as to receive light reflected from the angled end, the lens being an integral part of the termination. In other embodiments the lens is replaced with a cylindrical or tapered multimode stub which provide similar function.

  • Publication number: 20020123365
Abstract: A highly flexible base station architecture provides extremely flexible sectorization and capacity expansion capabilities. A base transceiver station (BTS) appliance can be interfaced with similar modules to form a higher capacity, sectorized configuration. Each BTS appliance can function as a standalone cell. In addition, multiple BTS appliances can be connected together to create a multi-sector base station in which the BTS appliances share baseband data, facilitating softer handoff. A backhaul interface module concentrates the backhaul and supports distribution and routing of packets from the network to co-located BTS appliances.

  • Patent number: 6084772
Abstract: An electronics enclosure is provided with passive thermal management for a high power electronic units, for example a power amplifier for wireless telecommunications, the enclosure being suitable for mast head mounted units, or remotely located units exposed to a wide range of weather conditions. The use of heat pipes in place of a conventional heat sink provides for natural convection cooling and eliminates the need for fans. Appropriate selection of materials, using copper and aluminum respectively, for the construction of heat pipe and cooling fin assemblies provides a significant reduction in weight and volume is achieved relative to know units having conventional heatsinks and forced air convection cooling. Since the heat pipe efficiency decreases at low temperature, the power amplifier self heats the unit in cold weather and eliminates the need for heaters. This further reduces the power consumption and the size of the unit.

  • Patent number: 5883784
Abstract: Mounting for holding a planar electronic device, e.g. a printed circuit board in electronic slots to receive edges of the electronic device and a clamp is inserted into each slot to clamp an edge of the device in heat conductive engagement with a side surface of the slot. The clamp has a rigid elongate clamp element inserted along the slot, springs to urge the clamp element towards the side surface of the clamp to provide a clamping action and a lever to move the clamp element out of a clamping position to release the electronic device.
