Patent number: 10364128Abstract: An assembly for controlling a vertically extending member includes a device having a stop member and a speed control member for controlling movement of the vertically extending member such as an elevator load bearing member during a roping procedure. In a disclosed example, the stop member is biased into a stop position where the vertically extending member is locked between a brake pad and a guiding member so that the vertically extending member cannot move relative to the device. An example input member for moving the stop member out of the stop position comprises a foot pedal that can be manipulated to control a position of the stop member. Absent manual manipulation of the input member, the stop member prevents movement of the vertically extending member. In a disclosed example, a speed control member comprises a pad that selectively engages a vertically extending member responsive to manual manipulation of a handle for moving the pad relative to a base of the device.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2016Date of Patent: July 30, 2019Assignee: OTIS ELEVATOR COMPANYInventors: Valery Sheynkman, Richard S. Blakelock, Troy R. Chicoine, Douglas B. LaBrecque, Craig A. Buckley, William J. Derwin

Patent number: 9604823Abstract: An assembly for controlling a vertically extending member includes a device (22) having a stop member (34) and a speed control member (36) for controlling movement of the vertically extending member such as an elevator load bearing member (32) during a roping procedure. In a disclosed example, the stop member (34) is biased into a stop position where the vertically extending member (32) is locked between a brake pad (60) and a guiding member (54) so that the vertically extending member (32) cannot move relative to the device (22). An example input member for moving the stop member (34) out of the stop position comprises a foot pedal (70) that can be manipulated to control a position of the stop member (34). Absent manual manipulation of the input member, the stop member (34) prevents movement of the vertically extending member (32).Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2006Date of Patent: March 28, 2017Assignee: Otis Elevator CompanyInventors: Valery Sheynkman, Richard S. Patent number: 7857115Abstract: A device (42) useful for working on an escalator (20) provides a tread surface (50) that is obliquely oriented relative to an incline (I) of the escalator (20) during a maintenance or repair procedure. A disclosed example is useful for spanning at least a portion of an escalator (20) where the normal operating steps (22) have been removed for purposes of working on the escalator (20). A disclosed example includes a tread surface (50), a riser portion (52) that is at least partially generally perpendicular to the tread surface (50), a first axle hook (54) and a second axle hook (56). The axle hooks rest upon spaced axles (46) associated with the escalator for positioning a temporary step (44) as desired for facilitating working on the escalator.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2006Date of Patent: December 28, 2010Assignee: Otis Elevator CompanyInventors: Douglas B. Patent number: 5894911Abstract: Microprocessor-based car door locking system includes an electromechanical door lock for elevator car doors having a latch-type rotary solenoid to move a plunger into locked and unlocked positions. In the locked position, the plunger engages a bracket mounted on the elevator car door. The door lock also includes a controller that integrates the door lock into the elevator system and provides failure management for the door lock. The door lock of the present invention does not require power during either the locked or unlocked state.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1997Date of Patent: April 20, 1999Assignee: Otis Elevator CompanyInventors: Ali Bozorgzadeh, Troy R. Patent number: 4919227Abstract: A speaker grille is provided which protects the speaker diaphragm from tampering or vandalism. Speakers which are used in public places for intercoms, message transmission, voice synthesis instructions, or the like will be covered by the speaker grille which has two sets of misaligned sound transmitting apertures, which will allow sound to emanate from the speaker, but will prevent objects from being pushed through the grille apertures to the diaphragm. Each set of apertures is found in a separate grille component, and the components are then assembled to form the improved grill. The construction of the grilled assembly is such that it will resist most attempts to break it with commonly carried items.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1989Date of Patent: April 24, 1990Assignee: Oits Elevator CompanyInventor: Troy R.
