    Abstract: The invention is directed to a wireless handheld device that securely accesses one or more remote devices subject to locally authenticating a user via biometrics. The device may be implemented as a wireless mouse with a biometric sensor incorporated with a scroll wheel that captures a biometric from the user and authenticates the user to the device using the captured biometric. More specifically, the captured biometric is compared to a template stored in memory. The device transmits a wireless signal, such as a command stream including the user's user name and password, to access the remote devices when the captured biometric matches the template. However, the device does not operate when the user is not authenticated. Accordingly, the invention may be particularly useful to log-on and log-off a user who frequently leaves and returns to a personal computer or various remote devices during the course of a day.

The data storage device includes a flexible member to mechanically and electrically couple the host connector of the device to a housing that holds the storage elements. The housing may comprise a receptacle for insertion of the host connector when the device is not coupled to a host computer. The flexible member may define a length and a flexibility sufficient to allow the host connector to be inserted into the receptacle in the housing. When the host connector is inserted into the receptacle in the housing, the data storage device forms a loop, allowing the device to be attached to items or objects or possibly worn as jewelry.

The memory device also includes a first set of electrical contacts accessible through a top major surface of a memory device housing and a second set of electrical contacts accessible through a bottom major surface of the memory device housing. The first and second sets of electrical contacts allow a device, such as another memory device, to couple to the host computer through the memory device. In this way, the amount of memory available to the host computer can be increased while maintaining a small form factor for each of the devices.

The memory card maintains a form factor of the memory card standard when the shieldless tab is retracted, which allows the memory card to be used similar to a conventional memory card of the memory card standard. In order to fit within the memory card standard form factor, the shieldless tab may be an altered version of a conventional connector interface conforming to the host connection standard.

    Abstract: In general, the invention allows for content protection of digital data by intentionally introducing errors introduced within error correction information during the production or generation of an original digital medium, or any authorized copy thereof The errors may be introduced within error correction information corresponding to the stored content, such as a software application, audio or video file, or within a stored “access key” used to access the content. The errors may be introduced, for example, at the time of manufacturing of the medium or when making an authorized copy of digital data. When authenticating digital media, the erroneous error correction information is disregarded and corresponding “raw” uncorrected data is used for authentication purposes.
