  • Patent number: 5540107
Abstract: An improved liquid flow meter for measuring moderate to low liquid flow rates with improved accuracy and minimal back pressure. The flow meter has a housing with two halves, a cover and a body, that fit together around a impeller so that liquid may flow and turn the impeller. Impeller performance is improved by use of a tapered inlet nozzle that increases liquid velocity while minimizing back pressure. Liquid is introduced tangent to the impeller by the tapered inlet nozzle to enhance initial impeller turning. The impeller registers the liquid flow by turning. The turning of the impeller is sensed electronically. Plenums are used for inlet and outlet flow to create regions of relatively consistent pressure regardless of duct location and orientation. The impeller fins are almost as wide as the impeller chamber to prevent liquid flow around the impeller. A magnet is encapsulated within the impeller that gives rise to a detectable electromagnetic flux when the impeller turns.

  • Patent number: 4285018
Abstract: A disk file for storing data is disclosed which comprises two major separable assemblies, an HDA assembly and a disk drive assembly. The HDA assembly is characterized by two separate carriage units each of which function to position a plurality of magnetic transducers in transducing relationship with a different group of magnetic disks which are mounted on a common horizontally disposed disk spindle. The disk drive assembly is characterized by an integral baseplate whose front section is generally U-shaped in cross-sections permitting the lower portion of the HDA assembly which surrounds the magnetic disks to be positioned within the opening defined by the opposed surfaces of the U-shaped front portion. The front portion is open to accommodate the positioning of the HDA assembly on the drive assembly by a horizontal loading motion. The drive portion of the baseplate is provided with a horizontally disposed shelf portion to which the magnetic structure of a voice coil motor is mounted.

  • Patent number: 4136293
Abstract: A voice coil motor having a plurality of independent coils movable within annular flux gaps which are supplied in parallel with flux from a single permanent magnet. The actuator comprises a single permanent magnet mounted to a low reluctance backing plate, a plurality of pole pieces, and a low reluctance casing including an integral pole plate provided with a like plurality of pole piece receiving apertures. The casing extends from the perimeter of the pole plate portion to the backing plate completely surrounding the pole pieces, coils and the magnet. Each pole piece has a rectangular base attached to the permanent magnet and a cylindrical portion which extends into the pole plate portion to define the annular gap, the axis of which is generally normal to the permanent magnet. Adjacent pole pieces abut each other along one edge to assist in maintaining a balanced magnetomotive force to the pole pieces.
