  • Patent number: 6158349
Abstract: A gas generator adapted to be disposed in a rear part of a projectile for increasing the flight range thereof, includes a housing defining a combustion chamber and having a bottom and a longitudinal axis; a fuel accommodated in the combustion chamber; an outlet opening provided in the housing bottom for passage of combustion gases generated in the combustion chamber upon combustion of the fuel; and a plastic fuel-supporting tube extending axially from the outlet opening into the combustion chamber. The plastic material of the fuel-supporting tube is selected such that upon combustion of the fuel aided by a gas pressure of a projectile propellant and by a drag effect, the fuel-supporting tube is deformed and driven out of the outlet opening.

  • Patent number: 6035501
Abstract: A method of making a subcaliber kinetic energy projectile includes the following consecutive steps: friction-welding a light-metal blank to a frontal end face of a tungsten heavy metal penetrator core, wherein the blank is overdimensioned relative to the penetrator core; and forming a conical projectile tip from the blank.

  • Patent number: 5936191
Abstract: A subcaliber kinetic energy projectile includes a cylindrical penetrator core of tungsten heavy metal; a solid conical projectile tip of light metal adjoining a front end of the penetrator core in a butt joint; and a friction weld bonding the penetrator core to the projectile tip at the butt joint.

  • Patent number: 5467713
Abstract: An ignition and safety device for a grenade projectile provided with a shaped charge insert and having a bottom-side impact fuse that has a spin-dependent safety element and acceleration-dependent safety element (14, 17), and a self-destruct device. The self-destruct device includes a pyrotechnical delay segment (29) that is axially displaceable into engagement with a firing pin (30) by means of the launch acceleration and acts on a booster charge (8), which is disposed extremely off-center of the projectile axis for the projectile effective charge. Consequently, no shaped charge jet is formed during self-destruction for the projectile.

  • Patent number: 5333551
Abstract: A drive member for the projectile head of a large caliber, multi-purpose cartridge or a multi-purpose training cartridge, wherein a threaded connection is provided for the form-locking connection between the drive member and the projectile head. In order to give such multi-purpose cartridges or corresponding multi-purpose training cartridges a modular configuration, with their assembly taking place only at their location of use, the drive member is provided with radial bores that start at its outer edge or periphery at its end facing the projectile head. Before joining the projectile head and the drive member, a holding and clamping device is then introduced into these bores so as to securely hold the drive member when the respective projectile head is screwed to the drive member.

  • Patent number: 5090326
Abstract: A lightweight training bomblet provided with a housing made of cardboard or plastic. Such training bomblet should be easily assembled and be able to withstand the high acceleration forces generated during transport into a target area. To prevent undue deformations of the bomblet housings made, for example, of cardboard, during air transport and the resulting premature ignition during ejection from a carrier projectile, both cardboard or plastic housing covers are connected with one another by means of a pre-tensioned connecting arrangement and their abutment faces are pressed against the end faces of a tubular housing shell, with the abutment faces of the housing covers possibly additionally containing a holding and sealing arrangement which is pressed into or against the end faces of the housing shell.

  • Patent number: 5042389
Abstract: A large-caliber carrier projectile for transporting a payload, with the projectile including an ejection charge and an ejector plate for ejecting the payload from the carrier projectile over a target area. To overcome the problem of the ejector plate colliding with individual bomblets of the payload, and thus causing considerable interference with proper functioning or premature detonations in the air, the ejector plate is an eccentric center of gravity. Alternatively, the ejector plate may be segmented and composed of at least two separable parts which are separated by the action of centrifugal force after ejection from the carrier projectile.

  • Patent number: 4930420
Abstract: A projectile includes a propellant charge and a nozzle opening provided in a rear projectile part and serving as an exit for propellant charge gases during flight of the projectile; a resilient rupturnable rubber or plastic sealing disc closing the nozzle opening for protection against environmental influences.

  • Patent number: 4779536
Abstract: To increase the penetration effectiveness, a tip area of the sub-caliber projectile body of a kinetic energy projectile, which immediately follows the possible tip has a greater diameter D over its length L than the diameter d in the following areas of the projectile body.

  • Patent number: 4524696
Abstract: An explosive shrapnel shell has a bursting charge having a front end, a layer of shrapnel laterally surrounding the charge except at the end, a fuse mounted on the front end, and shrapnel in the fuse. The fuse includes a detonator charge lying between the fuse shrapnel and the bursting charge. The shell is generally centered on an axis extending through the front end and the fuse includes an axially rearwardly extending tube. The detonator charge is in and axially behind the tube and the fuse shrapnel form a ring circumferentially surrounding the tube. An intensifying charge can lie between the detonator charge and the bursting charge.
