    Abstract: A video production facility has a switching matrix for video signals that serves both as the usual studio switching matrix for video signals interposed between video signal sources and video signal destinations and also provides the necessary switching for supplying signals to a mixer and for directing the outputs of the mixer to their destinations. The signals to be mixed are directed to the outputs of the switching system that are connected to the mixer inputs. The switching system is subdivided into a first switch matrix for standard composite television signals, a second switch matrix for analog component television signals and a third switching matrix for digital video signals. Coders and decoders are provided for interconnecting the first and second switching matricies and analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters for interconnecting the second and third. The mixer is operated on a digital basis, and a control unit control the operation of the mixer and of the rest of the switching system.

    Abstract: A switch (7) changes its position field by field so that the first field of each frame of digitized video signals may be processed differently from the second field. One field may be furnished directly to the switch and the other one through a line interpolator. In another embodiment, one field is subjected to a simpler line interpolator and the other to a line interpolator using two stages of one line delay. The line interpolators preserve some of the quality of the higher line count signal produced by a high definition camera. The signals passing through the switch (7) are distributed line by line alternately to storage units (M1) and (M2), where they are written in at a sampling rate determined in accordance with the invention. They are read out at a lower sampling rate field by field alternately from the two storage means, so that one field is read out while two fields are written in, each with the desired lower line count and desired line length to avoid geometrical distortion.

    Abstract: The output signal of a television pickup tube is caused to appear in a carrier frequency range above the video frequency baseband without the interposition of preliminary baseband transmission. This is done by modulation at carrier frequency by any of a variety of methods that chops or modulates the signal as it is formed, at a frequency which should be in the neighborhood of 16 MHz for a video bandwidth of 5 MHz. The modulation may be done by breaking up the picture on the pickup electrode by an optical grid or similarly interposing a grid which interrupts the scanning beam that scans the electrode, in which cases the modulating frequency is related to the scanning rate. Electronic modulation of the beam can also be applied to a suitable part of the electron gun structure or to a special modulating control electrode.

    Abstract: In a color television camera where the semiconductor array picture sensors for the three colors of a television signal have, for example, 420 points per line, so that the first order carrier frequency lies in the neighborhood of 8 MHz, corresponding picture points for the respective colors are offset by 1/3 of the picture point period for any one color. The green signal is used as a reference signal and the red and blue signals are separated into a high-frequency component and a component limited to a top frequency of 3 MHz. The higher frequency components of the red and blue signals are added to the green signal, so that the phase relations at the first order carrier frequency will tend to cancel, so that a wideband green component of greatly reduced high frequency interference and band limited red and blue components free of such interference are made available with very simple signal processing to improve the resolution of the television picture.
