As the upper load suspension point is moved, an inner safety zone around the load is repeatedly dynamically determined according to state variables of the crane. The state variables include at least a position and a speed of movement of the upper load suspension point, and an effective pendulum length of the load. The control unit checks, based on further known information whether an object different from the load has entered the inner safety zone, in which case the movement of the upper load suspension point is stopped or a message to stop the movement is outputted to an operator of the crane. Otherwise, the movement is maintained or no message to stop the movement is outputted to the operator.

In order to detect the vibration, a first sensor is arranged in the first region of the machine element and a second sensor is arranged on another machine element or in a different region of the one machine element. Actual values detected by the first and second sensors and corresponding target values are supplied to a dual controller which determines on the basis of these values, a resulting manipulated variable for the active vibration damper and actuates the active vibration damper accordingly.

Therefore it is no longer necessary to provide specially designed hardware for the actuation of piezo actuators, but instead the above-mentioned controllers can be used. Furthermore, as a result of the adaptation element, the piezo actuators can be integrated in the bus of the numerical control system. This allows communication in real time via the NC bus.

Said control device (4) determines the jolt profile in such a way that an oscillation of the oscillatory system (2) which is excited at the beginning of the speed change is calmed at the end of the speed change.
