Patent number: 4709629Abstract: In a floating roll the abutment faces of the transverse seals at the crosshead are not radial or axial but have an orientation corresponding to a spherical surface, the center of which is situated in the center of the adjacent bearing on which the cylinder is supported on the crosshead. When the crosshead flexes, the position of the transverse seal relative to the inner circumference of the cylinder and hence the abutment of the transverse seal at the inner circumference are not changed.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1986Date of Patent: December 1, 1987Assignee: Eduard KustersInventors: Valentin Appenzeller, deceased, by Maria Appenzeller, heir, by Regine Appenzeller, heir, by Doris Pegels, heir, by Ernst Appenzeller, heir

Patent number: 4506421Abstract: In a controlled deflection roll comprising a rotating shell forming the working roll periphery and a stationary beam extending lengthwise through the shell and spaced all around from the inner periphery of the shell, the space between the beam and the inner periphery of the shell, in the neighborhood of the operative plane, is divided into chambers by longitudinal seals and a number of transverse seals, the chambers have separate feed lines and each pair of adjacent chambers has a common transverse seal between them. Neighboring chambers are connected by a duct and non-return valves so that the transverse seal is always acted upon by the pressure of the higher-pressure chamber and pressed against the inner periphery of the shell. The chambers can be formed on the side of the beam facing the nip and also on the side remote from the nip and can also be individually filled with pressure fluid at different temperatures.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1982Date of Patent: March 26, 1985Assignee: Eduard KustersInventors: Valentin Appenzeller, Eduard Kusters

Patent number: 3973483Abstract: Pressure treatment apparatus for continuous web treatment includes a drum and a belt surrounding the drum almost completely with both drum and belt being movable with the web disposed in between. A pair of essentially semi-cylindrical sleeves are disposed about the belt as a supporting surface with a friction-reducing means, such as interconnected rollers, between the sleeves and belt to transfer force. The sleeve ends are spaced apart at two sides to permit passage of the web and belt while at the same time being urged together of both sides to impart a tensile force in the sleeve. This tensile force serves to exert a uniform pressure on the moving web substantially over the entire surface of the drum with the forces contained in a closed system and not loading the drum bearings.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1974Date of Patent: August 10, 1976Assignee: Edward KustersInventor: Valentin Appenzeller

Patent number: 3965769Abstract: A continuous press has two rotatively driven endless conveyor belts forming opposed, substantially linear spans defining a pressing zone, press platens applying pressure through these traveling spans to work carried therebetween, and anti-friction means being interposed between the platens and the spans. Such a press is improved in that the anti-friction means is formed by a multiplicity of endless loops of rotatively unpowered roller chains forming a bed interposed between the platens and the belt spans, the roller chain spans extending longitudinally with respect to the belt spans and being transversely packed together, but each chain being individually free to travel independently with respect to the others and to the belt span. The chains are formed so as to not have a continuous link gap so that the overall path is free from transverse interspacing.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1974Date of Patent: June 29, 1976Assignee: Eduard Kuesters MaschinenfabrikInventors: Karl-Heinz Ahrweiler, Valentin Appenzeller, Kurt Quoos, Eduard Kusters
