  • Patent number: 5911259
Abstract: Paint applied to a wheel electrostatically in the dry state is removed subsequently from the hub by a method of which the first step is to block the hub from one side with a plate, offered to a first face of the wheel and of shape such that it combines with the substantially cylindrical bore of the hub to create a chamber which remains accessible from the opposite face of the wheel. A jet of air is then generated close to the hub and introduced into the chamber, investing the cylindrical surface directly or indirectly or obliquely and creating a turbulence sufficient to remove the unwanted layer of paint; at the same time, suction is generated at least in the part of the chamber flooded with air, in such a way as to aspirate and recover the particles of paint removed from the hub and held in suspension by the resulting swirl.

  • Patent number: 5900080
Abstract: The starting material in a thixotropic forming process for the manufacture of road wheels, fitted ultimately with pneumatic tyres, is an ingot of rheocast metal alloy preheated to the semisolid state: the ingot is injected into a closed die affording a cavity in the shape of the wheel and equipped with independent thermoregulating circuits routed and controlled in such a way as to maintain the wider passages of the cavity at a temperature lower than that of the narrower passages; to ensure the die fills properly, the ingot is injected at a variable and controlled velocity, correlated both to the rate at which the alloy spreads through the cavity and to the geometry of the cavity itself, whereupon a pressure much higher than the injection force is applied to the solid-semisolid interface within the alloy, and sustained until full solidification is achieved.

  • Patent number: 5772801
Abstract: In a process for the forming of wheel rims in metal alloy, a cast blank undergoes a cold chip removal process by cutting its central area, its inner surface and its lateral surface in order to obtain a semi-finished work which is then heated and plastically deformed by flow forming along its lateral surface to obtain an inner edge, an outer edge and a middle portion with a defined machine allowance; the rim thus obtained undergoes another cold chip removal process by cutting in order to work it down to the required size; the latter process may be preceded by solution and age hardening heat treatments.

  • Patent number: 5429422
Abstract: The semifinished casting for an alloy road wheel undergoes three successive machining operations in which material is removed by stages to produce an inner circumferential seating, destined ultimately to accommodate one bead of a tire, a center hole coaxial both with the inner seating and with the axis of rotation of the wheel, also a set of fixing holes of which the axes describe a circle centered on the axis of rotation, and finally, an outer circumferential seating destined to accommodate the remaining bead of the tire, which is offset from the axis of rotation in such a way as to achieve a non-uniform distribution of mass, limited to the part of wheel affording the outer circumferential seating, that varies progressively with the change in angular position around the axis of rotation between a maximum and a minimum value.
