    Abstract: The object of the invention is a method, network element, and system for positioning a subscriber terminal in a packet-switched mobile telephone network, the said network comprising a core network element (SGSN, 504), base stations, a Base Station Controller (501) controlling these, and a mobile terminal; the connections in the mobile telephone network are arranged in a packet-switched fashion. The system comprises a location unit (SMLC, 505) for determining the position of the terminal, functionally connected with the Base Station Controller (501) of the mobile telephone network; the connection between the Base Station Controller (501) and the location unit (SMLC) is circuit-switched.
