  • Patent number: 6660915
Abstract: Barley plants having reduced lipoxygenase-1 enzyme activity are provided, for example, barley plants expressing mutant LOX-1 protein. The barley plants of the invention are useful in the production of plant products such as malt and brewed beverages, particularly beer, having increased stability and reduced T2N potential.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 29, 2000
Date of Patent: December 9, 2003
Inventors: Anna Christina Douma, Albert Doderer, Verena Cameron-Mills, Birgitte Skadhauge, Lene Moelskov Bech, Natalie Schmitt, Jolanda Carolina Heistek, Johannes Reinier van Mechelen

  • Patent number: 6359196
Abstract: Tissue-specific regulatory sequences, including promoters from barley (Hordeum vulgare) genes encoding &agr;-glucosidase and cystatin-1 (cysteine protease inhibitor) have been identified and isolated. The gene promoters have particular utility in directing high level, germination preferred expression of heterologous proteins that impart increased agronomic and malting characteristics to a given plant. In addition, the invention relates to methods of producing transgenic plants by using chimeric genes, cassette vectors, kits, cells and methods comprising the promoter and signal sequence coding region of the gene for barley &agr;-glucosidase and the gene for barley cystatin-1.

  • Patent number: 6031155
Abstract: A genomic nucleic acid sequence encoding a 62 kDa barley endoxylanase has been isolated and characterized. The genomic DNA sequences are used to transform plant cells for expression of enhanced amounts of active endoxylanase.
