  • Patent number: 5873592
Abstract: A trailer assembly to be drawn by a towing vehicle is provided. The trailer assembly includes a frame having a front end, a rear end, and a central axis. A tongue has one end attached to the frame front end, the other end of the tongue is adapted for removable attachment to a towing vehicle for drawing the trailer. A pair of steerable front wheels cooperate with the frame front end on opposite sides of the central axis. The front wheels are retained by front wheel supports which are pivotally attached to the frame about a steering axis. Each front wheel has an axis of rotation offset from its steering axis to allow self-steering of the front wheels. A pair of steerable rear wheels cooperate with the frame and are mounted by rear wheel supports. A steering mechanism connects the front wheels to the rear wheels so as to mutually steer the rear wheels when the front wheels self-steer in response to the trailer being drawn by the towing vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5033763
Abstract: A steerable trailer to be drawn by a vehicle is provided that has a generally horizontal frame to which are mounted two wheel supports. Each wheel support is pivotably mounted to the frame to rotate about a vertical axis and to support a wheel rotatably mounted to the wheel support to rotate about a horizontal axis. A steering pulley is also pivotably mounted to the frame to rotate about a vertical axis, and a tongue adapted for temporary attachment to the drawing vehicle is attached to the steering pulley. Any angular displacement imparted to the steering pulley by the drawing vehicle, through the tongue, is communicated from the steering pulley to each wheel support by a flexible tensile member, resulting in a proportional angular displacement of each wheel support. The flexible tensile member forms a continuous FIG. 8 loop to rotate each wheel support in a direction opposite to that of the steering pulley.

  • Patent number: 4934726
Abstract: A steerable trailer to be drawn by a vehicle is disclosed having a pair of first and a pair of second steerable wheels. Each of the steerable wheels are retained by a wheel support which is rotatable relative to the trailer frame about a steering axis. A tongue is pivotably attached to the frame for connecting the trailer to the towing vehicle. A flexible tensile member is attached to the tongue and extends about an engagement surface affixed to the wheel supports. The first and second wheel supports rotate in opposite directions in response to the pivoting of the tongue relative to the frame to steer the trailer.
