  • Publication number: 20110091576
Abstract: A method for the treatment and prophylaxis of conditions of aging due oxidative stress and as growth factors of stem cells. Such conditions due to oxidative stress are associated with a decreased presence of one or more cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzymes in the tissue of a subject. Such conditions include but are not limited to alzheimer's disease, parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, autism, lou gehrig's disease, huntington's disease, diabetes mellitus, amyloid diseases, atherosclerosis, arthritis, osteoporosis, cystic fibrosis. The method comprises administering to the patient a pharmaceutically effective, non-toxic amount of one or more compounds that increases the presence of one or more Carbonic Anhydrase Isozymes whose levels have been reduced in the subject.

  • Patent number: 7256184
Abstract: A method for the treatment and prophylaxis of conditions of aging in humans, such conditions of aging associated with a decreased presence of one or more cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzymes. Such conditions include chronic neurodegenerative conditions including dementia such as Alzheimer's disease. The method comprises administering to the patient a pharmaceutically effective, non-toxic amount of a compound that increases the presence of one or more cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzymes whose levels are reduced in the patient. Such compound may be the cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzyme, a compound that when absorbed by the body reacts or dissociates to form the cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzyme, or a compound that promotes the natural generation of the cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzyme within the body.

  • Patent number: 6821997
Abstract: A method for the treatment and prophylaxis of conditions of aging in humans, such conditions of aging associated with a decreased presence of cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzymes in the brain, such as conditions associated with chronic neurodegenerative conditions including dementia such as Alzheimer's disease, which method includes the administering over an extended period of time, ranging from 6 months to 5 years, of a pharmaceutically effective, non-toxic amount of a compound that increases the presence of cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzymes in the brain. That compound may be the cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzyme, a compound that when absorbed by the body reacts or dissociates to form the cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzyme, or a compound that promotes the natural generation of the cell-specific carbonic anhydrase enzyme within the body.

  • Patent number: 5944021
Abstract: A method for treating victims of cerebral edema is presented that includes the intravenous injection of a carbonic anhydrase enzyme inhibitor that passes through the blood-brain barrier, such as acetazolamide (A.K.A., DIAMOX.RTM.), which is a readily-available and often-prescribed diuretic. Such edema, or brain swelling may be caused as a result of ischemic strokes especially, but also swelling due to tumors, surgeries, or cerebral trauma. It is preferred to combine the a carbonic anhydrase enzyme inhibitor therapy with hyperventilation of the lungs, even including the use of supplemental oxygen, thereby to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood and hence in the brain.

  • Patent number: 5570477
Abstract: A portable fan apparatus is provided for ventilating toilet bowls by forced ventilation wherein air from the toilet bowl is exhausted by the fan via a tube that extends through the water trap formed by water in the trap formed partly by the bottom of the toilet bowl and partly by the drain portion of the toilet, thereby exhausting the foul air into the drain line of the building's plumbing system. The apparatus can be carried by a traveler from toilet to toilet, thereby to provide the desired ventilation for any toilet facility the traveler may visit.

  • Patent number: 5411493
Abstract: A method for treating hypothermia or hyperthermia patients is presented wherein the upper torso of the patient is maintained in close contact with a wet absorbent material in a vestlike garment that carries a water supply to maintain the absorbent material wet to effect sensible heat transfer between the patient and the water. In one embodiment, evaporative cooling is moderated by an overgarment of a waterproof material.

  • Patent number: 5411494
Abstract: A therapeutic method for treating hypothermia and hyperthermia conditions in human patients by applying a continuous flow of temperature-controlled warmed water over a substantial area of the body of the patient to effect sensible heat transfer between the body and the water. Apparatus is provided for warming, delivering, and distributing the water flow over at least fifty percent of the patient's body and for collecting spent water into a receptacle. A network of water-permeable tubes delivers a flow of warmed water to an absorbent web draped over the body of the patient, thereby to distribute the water flow over a large area and in close proximity to and wetting the surface of the patient's body, thereby to effect sensible heat transfer over a large area. Evaporative heat loss may be minimized by reducing air convection adjacent the water flow.
