Abstract: An electrically small antenna, such as one physically sized appropriate to a mobile device, can be tuned in response to a detected change that can result in poorer reception using the electrically small antenna. Such detected changes include a detected change in the connectivity of a wired accessory relative to the mobile device, a detected change in a position of the mobile device, and a detected change of an audio channel selected by the mobile device. To minimize any user impact of the retuning of the electrically small antenna, a timer can be initiated and the antenna can be retuned during an opportune time, such as when one or more signal metrics associated with a signal being provided to the user drop below a threshold, or when the timer expires, whichever occurs first.

Abstract: An electronic device enclosure grounding structure (200) that provides a low impedance path to ground for selected AC frequencies. A conductive portion of an electronic enclosure, such as a conductive back (108) of a cell phone (100) has a capacitive coupling to a second surface (206) that is conductively isolated from the enclosure. Second surface (206) is connected to a ground point (207) through a conductive arm (205) that has a predefined inductance. The resulting series capacitance-inductance circuit (300) allows a reactive connection between the enclosure (108) and ground (207) that has a settable resonant frequency.

Abstract: An antenna system (200,400,500,600) for use within a communication device (100) is disclosed. The communication device (100) including a signal source (260,425,635), a main housing (105) and a movable flip housing (110) moveably coupled to the main housing (105) through a hinge assembly (125). The hinge assembly (125) being comprised of a hinge shaft, a first knuckle (805) coupled to one side of the hinge shaft, and a second knuckle (810) coupled to an opposing side of the hinge shaft. The antenna system (200,400,500,600) includes at least one of the knuckles of the hinge assembly (125).

Abstract: An antenna system (300) for a communication device (100) includes an auxiliary antenna (140) and a printed circuit board (130). The auxiliary antenna (140) is located within a movable flip housing (110) of the communication device (100). The auxiliary antenna (140) has a structure comprising an electromagnetic radiator and a coupling probe (315). The printed circuit board (130) is located within a main housing (105) of the communication device (100). The coupling probe (315) couples the auxiliary antenna (140) to the printed circuit board (130).
