  • Patent number: 6043312
Abstract: The present invention is directed to improved thermoplastic compositions which possess, when utilized for plenum cable construction, not only enhanced low flame and smoke properties, but also enhanced physical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation retention, high and low temperature stability, etc. The thermoplastic compositions may be utilized in various embodiments for producing both the insulation and jacketing layers of plenum cables. In addition, the present invention is also directed to the insulated wire and the jacketed electrical cable produced utilizing the improved thermoplastic compositions.

  • Patent number: 4520260
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved semi-conductive heating cable having semi-conductive material surrounded by a jacket that is imparted with improved resistance to color change upon exposure to elevated temperatures and is able to minimize changes in the ambient electrical resistivity of the semi-conductive composition arising from exposure of the cable to elevated temperatures by reason of the jacket being made from a radiation crosslinked composition comprising a mixture of at least one elastomer with at least one polyolefin and at least one heat stabilizer wherein the preferred elastomer comprises either or both a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and at least one diene or an ethylene propylene rubber and the polyolefin is a polypropylene polymer.

  • Patent number: 4456654
Abstract: Disclosed are crosslinked elastomeric compositions particularly suitable as a jacketing material for plenum cable. The compositions are based upon a mixture of an elastomeric component comprising an elastomeric copolymer of ethylene and methyl acrylate containing carboxylic crosslinking sites and from about 180 parts to about 350 parts by weight of at least one filler per 100 parts by weight of the elastomeric component to provide a limiting oxygen index of at least about 45 percent. Although the compositions may contain further additives such as processing aids, crosslinking agents, anti-oxidants, plasticizers and flame retardants, they are able to meet or exceed the flame spread and optical density requirements of Underwriters Laboratories UL 910 Tunnel Flame Test for electrical plenum cable jacketing material without the necessity of containing halogens.

  • Patent number: 4401783
Abstract: Disclosed is a flame retardant thermoplastic elastomeric composition that in the form of an insulation about an electrical conductor is able to meet or exceed the requirements of UL VW-1 Vertical Flame Test and in the form of a jacket about an electrical cable is able to meet or exceed the requirements of IEEE-383 Cable Tray Flame Test while having a limiting oxygen index of only 24 to 27 percent. The composition has an elastomeric component of the type comprising about 25 to about 75 parts by weight of a crystalline olefin resin and about 75 to about 25 parts by weight of a vulcanized monoolefin copolymer rubber comprising a polymer of ethylene or propylene and one other alpha olefin of the formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHR where R is an alkyl of 1-12 carbon atoms. The composition includes a non-elastomeric component comprising blending about 20 to about 40 parts by weight of a flame retardant compound and about 5 to about 20 parts by weight of antimony oxide and about 0.

  • Patent number: 4216802
Abstract: An improved elongate deformable tube for use in the conveyance of fluids and/or fluid transmission signals under pressure having a bore therethrough enclosed by a composite annular wall comprising a seamless, as welded, or welded and drawn inner tubular shaped layer made from a metallic material and an outer tubular shaped layer made from a polymeric material. The walls of both the inner and outer layers are substantially uniform in radial thickness around their circumferences with the radial wall thickness of the outer polymeric layer being 50% or more than the total radial thickness of the composite wall of the tube. The outer layer is preferably formed about the inner layer by means of an extrusion process.
