  • Patent number: 5361740
Abstract: A mechanical component has a recess for receiving a ceramic insert. The insert is held in the recess by a retainer member which preferably resiliently biases the insert inwardly into the recess. The insert provides a hardened bearing surface for the associated mechanical component. For example, the mechanical component may be a piston for use in an engine brake (especially as a master piston in the engine brake), and the ceramic insert may be the portion of the piston assembly which contacts a moving part of the internal combustion engine with which the engine brake is used.

  • Patent number: 5146754
Abstract: A diverter for a divided volute turbocharger has a rotatable diverter member in one volute passageway of the turbocharger. The diverter member is rotatable between a first position in which the flow of gas through the associated volute passageway is unimpeded by the diverter member, and a second position in which the diverter member blocks the associated volute passageway and causes the gas from that passageway to flow through an interconnection passageway into the other volute passageway. If desired, the diverter member may block the interconnection passageway while the diverter member is in the first position.

  • Patent number: 5012778
Abstract: An engine retarding system of a gas compression release type is provided for an engine equipped with a high pressure hydraulic fluid supply system. The retarder comprises an hydraulically driven exhaust valve actuator, a solenoid actuated servo valve controlling the flow of high pressure hydraulic fluid from the supply to the actuator and an electronic controller which provides a signal to operate the solenoid as a function of the engine speed and crankshaft position.

  • Patent number: 4793307
Abstract: The invention is applicable to an internal combustion engine of the four-stroke cycle type equipped with a compression release engine retarder capable of producing one compression release event and one bleeder retarding event in each cylinder during every two revolutions of the engine crankshaft. This is accomplished by a novel articulated rocker arm assembly including a rocker member and a latch member in which the rocker member, engaged by the exhaust pushtube, is disengaged from the latch member, which acts against the crosshead, after a compression release event has occurred, but remains engaged if a compression release event does not occur. When the latch member is disengaged from the rocker member, the exhaust valves are held in a partially open position to produce a bleeder retarding event. A trigger valve acutated by the exhaust pushtube and rocker member vents the reatarder high pressure hydraulic system to initiate the bleeder retarding event.
