  • Patent number: 6172812
Abstract: Coated optical substrates and a method of coating optical substrates with anti-reflective (AR) coatings are described. The composition of the coating is determined by material constraints such as adhesion, durability, ease of manufacture, and cost. The thickness of one or more layers of AR material is determined by minimizing the product of the Fresnel reflection coefficients for the coated article with the angle- and wavelength-dependent sensitivity of the human visual system. Preferred designs have a value of perceived reflectance, F, less than or equal to 1.25 Fmin where Fmin is the minimized perceived reflectance for the coated article. Coatings which have minimal perceived reflection while maintaining reflections with desired visually perceived colors are also described.

  • Patent number: 6096371
Abstract: A method of coating optical substrates with anti-reflection (AR) coatings is described. The thickness and composition of the coating is determined by minimizing the product of the Fresnel reflection coefficients for a coating with the angular- and wavelength-dependent sensitivity of the human visual system to minimize the perceived reflectance for the coated article. A compact chamber is evacuated and flushed with chemically inert gas such as argon or nitrogen. One or more molecular precursors are deposited using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to form AR films. Single-layer AR coatings based on fluoropolymer films of controlled thickness, as well as organic, organosilicon, and/or inorganic multilayers are described. Also provided is a method for monitoring film growth optically, using a polarized, light-emitting diode, a polarizing optical filter, and a photodiode.

  • Patent number: 4622174
Abstract: A transparent protective laser shield and a method for forming the same are provided in which the shield is adapted to be interposed between a laser beam and a viewer for adjustably absorbing more than one narrow band radiation from laser beams while transmitting radiation in a broader band surrounding the narrow band laser beams. A transparent host material comprising a crystalline or amorphous glassy or plastic material having substantial transmission properties of optical radiation has introduced therein a plurality of chromophores selected from a porphyrin complex which has been modified by a metal providing metallo-porphyrin complexes in the transparent material which absorbs optical radiation at predetermined narrow band wave lengths located within the selected broad band wave length passed by the transparent host material.
