  • Patent number: 7624488
Abstract: A one-piece barrel assembly cart includes a right assembly cart base connected with a left assembly cart base and at least three stabilizer rings that are attached to the assembly cart base. The one-piece barrel assembly cart may be used to stabilize a tapered cured composite barrel, for example the large fuselage barrel of the aft section of a large new generation aircraft, such as a 7E7 Boeing airplane. A modular assembly cart includes at least two identical modules. Each of these modules includes a cart base and a stabilizer ring. The diameter of the inner surface of the stabilizer ring may vary as needed. Other modules including a fuselage support may be added. By providing modular assembly carts any shape and size of a one-piece composite barrel may be stabilized after curing of the composite material.

  • Patent number: 7278198
Abstract: A mandrel segment loader provides a reliable means of assembling the segments of a large multi-piece mandrel designed for the lay-up of composite materials in the manufacture of large structures such as one-piece fuselage barrels for wide-body aircraft and can also be used for removing the mandrel from the finished fuselage barrel by disassembling the segments. The mandrel segment loader provides transport and multi-axis positioning for the segments, which may weigh as much as 25,000 pounds, with linear positioning resolution in the realm of 0.002 inch and rotational positioning resolution in the realm of 0.005 degree. The mandrel segment loader is also more generally useful as a material handling system that can perform many useful manufacturing functions, such as loading passenger floors into a fuselage barrel when assembling an aircraft. Self-locking grippers prevent accidental self-release of a load.

  • Patent number: 6755407
Abstract: A clamp for securing a tool to a multi-piece panel assembly. The clamp is especially suited for applications where access to only one side of the panel assembly is available. The clamp uses a blind temporary fastener that is secured to the panel assembly to hold the independent panels of the assembly together. The clamp includes an sleeve member that is attached to the temporary fastener and a socket that attaches to the sleeve member and is axially adjustable therewith. The clamp attaches to the temporary fastener without modification of the temporary fastener and clamps the tool to the panel assembly. The clamp is adjustable for a variety of tool thicknesses and can be removed without removal of the temporary fastener.
