    Abstract: Coated ceramic filler materials comprised of ceramic particles, fibers, whiskers, etc. having at least two substantially continuous coatings thereon are provided. The coatings are selected so that the interfacial shear strength between the ceramic filler material and the first coating, between coatings, or between the outer coating and the surrounding matrix material, are not equal so as to permit debonding and pull-our when fracture occurs. The resultant, multi-coated ceramic filler materials may be employed to provide composites, especially ceramic matrix composites, with increased fracture toughness. The ceramic filler materials are designed to be particularly compatible with ceramic matrices formed by directed oxidation of precursor metals, but such ceramic filler materials are also adaptable for use in many other composite material systems.In a preferred embodiment, the coatings are applied to the ceramic fiber plies or preforms by CVD.

    Abstract: This invention relates to metal and metal matrix composite materials that are useful as, for example, brake rotors, clutch plates and other similar uses which benefit from material properties of the invention. In the case of metal matrix composite materials, clutch plates and brake rotors made according to the invention comprise an interconnected matrix metal embedding at least one filler material. For example, the at least one filler material comprises numerous acceptable filler materials present in a sufficient quantity to provide desired performance. The brake rotors and clutch plates according to the invention further comprise a coating on the surface thereof causing the metal or metal matrix composite body to function as a substrate. The coatings may be applied by various conventional techniques.

    Abstract: An aluminum metal matrix composite comprises an aluminum metal matrix embedding a second filler, such as a ceramic second filler, and is formed by contacting, for example, a molten aluminum metal with a permeable mass of second filler within a ceramic impervious mold formed by growing a polycrystalline oxidation reaction product into a first filler. By hermetically sealing the second filler within the mold with a body of molten aluminum metal, the latter spontaneously infiltrates the mass of second filler at moderate temperatures, e.g. about 900.degree. C., without need of any other infiltration expedients. The molten mass containing the infiltrated ceramic filler is solidified to provide the metal matrix composite which may be recovered from the mold.

Stated more particularly, by subjecting a ceramic or a ceramic composite body being interconnected residual metal therein to a particular atmosphere, a protective layer can be formed from the interconnected metal. Such a layer can be protective, especially in corrosion environments which include various gaseous or solid species containing sodium and silicon, such as those found in glass tanks.

Particularly, a compliant layer composition is utilized for preventing the rupture of a ceramic article and/or the yielding or failure of a metal during the pouring, solidification and cooling of a molten metal which has been cast around the ceramic. A slurry composition for the compliant layer includes plaster of paris, a liquid vehicle and a filler material. The slurry composition is coated on the ceramic article and thereafter is heat-treated to form a compliant layer. Ceramic-metal composite bodies comprising low strength hollow articles and high expansion coefficient metals may be manufactured according to the method of this invention.
