  • Patent number: 4402475
Abstract: The use of thrusters at the bow and stern of an airship for control of the direction, attitude, and orientation of such an airship is described. The thruster utilizes an electric motor or a gas turbine for power. In the electric motor embodiment, the motor utilizes two contra-rotating rotors which each drive a separate and contra-rotating propeller to generate the controlling jet of air. Thrusters are arranged in pairs at the top, bottom, and each side of the bow and stern of the airship. Lifting thrusters directed downwardly and located above the longitudinal extent of the hull are provided to augment the static lift capability of the airship when under heavy load.

  • Patent number: 4208027
Abstract: A construction of the external skin of the hull of a metal-clad airship utilizing sections of hull plating of different thickness to connect the sheets or gores of the plating of the main portion of the hull to the base skin of structural members, such as external longerons and internal frame members.

  • Patent number: 4114837
Abstract: An air lifting vehicle includes, inter alia, a main frame containing an engine, a helicopter-type rotor driven by the engine, a rear located propeller which provides torque compensation for the rotor as well as yaw control for the vehicle, and a pilot's cabin. Attached to the frame through a plurality of outwardly extending truss members is a keel structure which includes a circular truss section essentially coaxial with and positioned above the rotor and other generally triangular or rounded triangular truss sections attached fore and aft of the circular truss section. Balloon members including fore and aft generally triangular Forlanini envelope sections are secured to the keel and laced together at the center to define a circular opening or duct above the rotor. A pair of forward thrusting propellers are driven by an auxiliary engine carried in the frame and are gimbaled in the elevational plane for pitch control of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4084918
Abstract: A method of generating power from wind comprising providing a turbine in an airstream with the turbine having a rotor with a plurality of blades and a stator with a plurality of blades upstream of the rotor. A portion of the ambient airstream is increased in velocity and reduced in pressure by passing such portion of the ambient airstream through the stator to provide an incoming airstream. The incoming airstream is passed through the rotor to drive the rotor and to provide an exiting airstream. The exiting airstream is conducted through a duct to increase the pressure and decrease the velocity of the exiting airstream, and subsequently the exiting airstream is discharged from the duct to the atmosphere.
