  • Patent number: 5176480
Abstract: A broaching insert, such as a slotter or semifinisher, which cuts through a workpiece is configured such that side cutting edges of the broaching insert contact the workpiece simultaneously. If the broaching insert is a slotter, a center portion of the cutting edge which interconnects the side cutting edge makes contact with the workpiece ahead of the side cutting edges. If the insert is a semi-finisher, the side cutting edges are scalloped so as to reduce shock upon engagement with the workpiece. The broaching insert is ideally suited to the cutting of workpieces oriented obliquely relative to the direction of cutting. In order to minimize snap-back of the broaching insert as it exits the workpiece, the broaching insert is sequentially passed through back-up disks of gradually diminishing hardness, whereby the compressive loading on the insert is relieved gradually.

  • Patent number: 5135339
Abstract: A broaching tool includes a holder and a plurality of broaching inserts mounted therein. Spacers are situated between successive pairs of inserts and are formed of a tougher material than the inserts. Each spacer includes a reinforcing web which abuts against a rear surface of its respective leading insert. The reinforcing web extends higher than a lower level of the cutting edge of that respective leading insert, so as to reinforce that insert. The web terminates short of its respective trailing insert, whereby a space is formed between the reinforcing web and the trailing insert for receiving chips formed by the latter.

  • Patent number: 4948309
Abstract: A clamping device for releasably securing a tooling adaptor in a tool clamp block comprising a generally cylindrical member having an eccentric slot for engaging and securing the tooling adaptor, the cylindrical member adapted to move in the direction of its longitudinal axis to reversibly load and engage the tooling adaptor.

  • Patent number: 4909684
Abstract: A retention knob for reversibly locking a tool holder to a locking device in which the shaft of the retention knob has a pair of opposed recesses separated by non-recessed portions to thereby provide a significantly stronger locking engagement between the tool holder and the locking device. Also disclosed are cutting tool assemblies employing the retention knob.

  • Patent number: 4884483
Abstract: A tool assembly which comprises a tool holder and tool block having respective alignable opposed slots and further includes a registration key secured in one pair of aligned slots and a thrust key secured in the other pair of aligned slots, the thrust key having an upper wall section adapted to engage the wall of the other tool holder slot to thereby cause the tool holder to rotate until the wall of the opposite slot is pressed against a corresponding wall of the registration key.

  • Patent number: 4875812
Abstract: A double retention pin assembly for securely locking a cutting insert in a recess of a cutting tool wherein the cutter body has an axial hole having a biaxial orientation, a primary retention pin is inserted into the axial hole along one of said axes and then angled with respect to said axis, and a secondary retention pin insertable into the axial hole of the primary retention pin and having the same angular orientation as the angled primary retention pin, said secondary retention pin exerting both a radial and axial locking force against the cutting insert.

  • Patent number: 4848199
Abstract: A cutting tool having a cutting tool insert which is automatically rotationally indexable and including a shank and an indexable cutting tool insert rotatably connected to the shank, the insert including a plurality of cutting edges and side surfaces therebetween, the cutting tool is also provided with an indexing device, lock pin, cam plate and eccentric cam pin, wherein the indexing device comprises a sliding key and a pair of indexing legs attached thereto for engaging a serrated portion of the lock pin to which the cutting tool insert is attached for indexing the insert on the lock pin upon rotation of the cam pin which effects a lateral movement of the cam plate along the longitudinal axis of the shank whereby the cam plate engages the sliding key causing it to also move laterally to engage the indexing legs on the lock pin and the cutting insert attached thereto.

  • Patent number: 4631993
Abstract: The machine tool parts and method of making same includes providing cooperating attachment means between the shank and the tool bit head assembly, wherein a predetermined portion of the attachment means on the shank is located a first predetermined distance from a fixed reference on the shank and the cutting edge of the tool bit head assembly is located a fixed predetermined distance from a portion of the attachment means on the tool bit head assembly, corresponding to the predetermined portion of the shank attachment means, with the additive sum of the first and fixed predetermined distances defining a predetermined cutting height of the cutting edge. Preferably, the attachment means comprise a key formed on the head assembly and a correspondingly proportioned key-way formed on the shank. The fixed reference on the shank is its bottom surface and the predetermined positions on the attachment means are the lowermost abutting edges of the key and key-way.
