  • Patent number: 6963638
Abstract: A method for using alphanumeric characters for a call number to establish a phone connection and for internal signaling in and between telecommunication networks. An alternative additional dialing method on an alphanumeric basis by using the complete character set of the ASCII character set with its national embodiments (alphanumeric subscriber call number ATR) with any length of the ATR freely set by the subscriber as an optional alternative that coexists with the current dialing method with a decimal number system (NTR). The ATR is sent from the terminal to the switching center and used preferably to establish a connection or converted to an NTR that is used to establish the connection with the target subscriber. The method may be introduced as an overlay process for the existing dialing method within existing networks.

  • Patent number: 6836849
Abstract: A method and controller for managing power and performance of a multiprocessor (MP) system is described. The controller receives sensor data corresponding to physical parameters within the MP system. The controller also receives quality of service and policy parameters corresponding to the MP system. The quality of service parameters define commitments to customers for utilization of the MP system. The policy parameters correspond to operation limits on inputs and outputs of the MP system. The operation input limits relate to the cost and availability of power or individual processor availability. The operation output limits relate to the amount of heat, acoustic noise levels, EMC levels, etc. that the individual or group of processors in the MP system are allowed to generate in a particular environment. A controller receives the physical parameters, the quality of service parameters and policy parameters and determines performance goals for the MP system and processors within the MP system.

  • Publication number: 20040194087
Abstract: A method and system in which client requests to a multi-server, local area network (server cluster) are accumulated during discrete time intervals (batching periods), but not processed immediately. The servers are initialized to a low power state. At the end of a batching period or upon occurrence of some other specified event, the server cluster selects one or more servers to process the accumulated requests. The selected servers are then powered on and the requests are distributed to the powered servers for processing and response generation. After all requests have been responded to, the server cluster typically powers down the servers such that servers are actively powered only during the periods when batched requests are being processed. During times when a server cluster's request loading is sufficiently light, the response periods will be significantly shorter than the batching periods.

  • Patent number: 6772199
Abstract: A method and system for enhanced cache efficiency is a cache associated with a server in a wide area network having multiple servers and clients. Objects retrieved from the network by a server are stored within a cache associated with the server and selected objects are designated as temporarily exempt from replacement based upon a preselected criterion, such as size or mandated quality of service for the client which requested the object. After the cache is full or nearly full, subsequently retrieved objects are stored by casting out one or more objects which are not exempt from replacement according to a specified replacement algorithm, such as Least Recently Utilized, or by casting out any object or objects, if all objects in the cache are designated as exempt from replacement.

  • Publication number: 20040131043
Abstract: A method for the display of standardised internet pages (for example, in HTML or XML standard), generated for display on large-size screens, on a small display on hand-held devices (mini-computer, PDA or mobile radio device) is disclosed, in which the hand-held device can be provided with a mobile radio connection to the internet. A virtual large image memory is thus maintained in the device. Within the large virtual image the device display can be freely displaced as a readable image section. A zoom function permits an overview and coarse positioning of the detailed representation. The detailed representation can be continuously moved around within the virtual image in the form of a screen section by means of a pointer device (mouse pointer) by moving the mouse pointer to the display edge (and beyond). Switching can be performed at any time between the display modes.

  • Publication number: 20040120264
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for carrying out monitoring in packet-oriented telecommunication networks and data networks. The inventive method makes it possible to reduce the processor performance required to carry out legal monitoring of telecommunication subscribers in switching nodes of packet-oriented telecommunication and data networks. The basic problem is the high number of comparably short data packets which must be respectively compared with the full list of subscriber connections which are to be monitored throughout the network and the computer power resulting therefrom required to carry out said tasks in each network node. The inventive method is based on a reduced individual node list which is automatically generated and maintained and the number of individual verifications is kept to a minimum within a network node.

  • Publication number: 20040030767
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for coupling online and Internet services. Currently, personalised services in particular (e-mail etc.) are only available from Internet service providers and online providers via the telecommunications network and RAS/RADIUS access and not via the public Internet. To solve said problem, the ISP is equipped with an open Internet application platform (OIA) (e.g. freemail platform) and the platforms are coupled in such a way that the ISP customer can take advantage of an extended range of services in comparison to usual Internet customers, even during access via the Internet. Said method permits in particular e-mails to be re-directed from the ISP server with a known address to the OIA platform, in such a way that the customer can use these services world-wide via the public Internet using any terminal via any network.

  • Publication number: 20030119493
Abstract: The inventive method enables existing contracts between a user and a telecommunications network operator to be enlarged by a user dialling into a customer subscription and administration server (CSAS). The access procedure of the existing contract relation is used for authenticating the user. The subscription of new contract components, such as clearing of a new terminal for instance that has been purchased by dispatch is carried out in a menu-controlled manner and by means of instruction texts and tactile inputs. The aim of the invention is to authenticate the calling user, authorise the additional contracts, changes and services which can be subscribed and administered by the corresponding user and store newly subscribed or changed contracts and services. The CSAS is connected to the corresponding data bases of the telecommunications network, such as CCBS, CDB and HLR. IP dialling options are optionally provided by means of the telecommunications network and/or the public internet.

  • Publication number: 20030103506
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the improved exploitation of resources between telecommunications networks and IP networks (for example, corporate LANs or the public Internet), for reducing the costs of permanent connections (always-on connections) and for optimsing IP address economy. According to said method an access, authentication and multiplex device (“RAMSES-client”) replaces the usual RADIUS client. Said RC has an authentication device (RAC) which is connected to the ISP-specific authentication device and authenticates the ISP access of the subscriber. During the periods when there is no traffic, the RC deactivates the connection between the telecommunications network and the IP network, while the subscriber-side connection is maintained. When the subscriber has new data traffic, the RC automatically activates the IP connection concerned to the ISP with reversion to the stored authentication data.

  • Publication number: 20030079151
Abstract: The distribution of power dissipation within cluster systems is managed by a combination of inter-node and intra-node policies. The inter-node policy consists of subdividing the nodes within the cluster into three sets, namely the “Operational” set, the “Standby” set and the “Hibernating” set. Nodes in the Operational set continue to function and execute computation in response to user requests. Nodes in the Standby set have their processors in the low-energy standby mode and are ready to resume the computation immediately. Nodes in the Hibernating set are turned off to further conserve energy, and they need a relatively longer time to resume operation than nodes in the Standby set. The inter-node policy further distributes the computation among nodes in the Operational set such that each node in the set consumes the same amount of energy.

  • Publication number: 20030061352
Abstract: A data processing server and method in which the server device stores a first fragment of a requested file in a first tier of storage while retaining subsequent fragments of the file in a lower tier of storage. The first tier is typically the server's volatile system memory while the second tier may represent a local disk, a networked storage device, or a remote system memory. When the server receives a client request for a file, the server transmits a first fragment of the file stored in the file cache to the client. Simultaneously, the server retrieves a subsequent fragment of the file from a lower tier of storage. By the time the first fragment is transmitted and acknowledged, the subsequent fragment is ready for transmission. In this manner, the server is able to maintain responsiveness while minimizing the amount of data cached in valuable system memory.
