The method can include, for a remote unit communicatively linked to an access service network (ASN) (112, 114), identifying a state change from a first state to a second state. Responsive to identifying the state change, an outbound message indicating the second state can be communicated to a carrier service network (CSN) (110). In another arrangement, responsive to identifying the state change, an indicator that indicates state information associated with the remote unit is available can be published by the ASN or the CSN.

The processor can be programmed to monitor the first wireless access technology for wireless access failures and automatically instruct the second wireless access technology to compensate for the wireless access failures of the first wireless access technology. The processor can automatically instruct by instructing the wide area base receiver to compensate for a failure of first wireless access technology or by instructing the wide area base receiver to increase cellular coverage in areas specified by the access point controller.
