  • Patent number: 3988494
Abstract: Metallizing coating compositions having greater sparkle and glitter are formed by including in the coating composition insoluble resin-supported planar reflective metal flakes in an amount of from about 0.0003 to about 0.035% of metal (particularly aluminum) based on the weight of the composition. The flakes are supported and rendered more planar by using a metal film surfaced on both sides with a relatively insoluble resinous film having a thickness of at least 0.01 mil. When the supported metal film is broken up to form flakes, the flakes are flatter and reflect light over a larger portion of their surface to permit use in smaller amount. The present invention relates to organic coatings containing separated reflective aluminum flakes which add sparkle to the coated film.
