  • Patent number: 4944370
Abstract: The drum drive (100, 200) comprises a generally annular-shaped drum (100, 200) which extends axially within an axial opening in an inboard half (140, 240) of a wheel (130, 230). The drum drive (100, 200) has end openings (112, 114; 212, 214) at opposite ends (102, 104; 202, 204) thereof which provide access to an interior axially extending opening (122, 222) of the drum drive (100, 200). An outboard end (104, 204) of the drum drive (100, 200) includes a radially extending flange (108, 208) which defines the associated end opening (114, 214) and provides a plurality of openings (118, 218) for receiving tie bolts (150, 250) that connect the drum drive (100, 200) with the wheel (130, 230). The drum drive (100, 200) includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced-apart, axially extending splines (128, 228) which extend radially inwardly from the interior surface of the drum drive (100, 200) and into the interior axially extending opening (122, 222 ).

  • Patent number: 4751985
Abstract: The compact brake piston-return mechanism (10) comprises a housing (22) having a bore (40) with a longitudinal sleeve (50) received fixedly in said bore (40). The sleeve (50) has a through opening (56) receiving therein a piston (60) which extends exteriorly of the through opening (56) to an enlarged diameter portion (69) for engaging a brake stack (32, 35, 36). The piston (60) has an interior opening (66) in which is disposed a deformable member (80) connected by means of a ring (70) with the piston (60). A deforming member (90) is disposed within said deformable member (80), deforming member (90) extending axially through an aperture (63) at an end (62) of the piston (60) disposed within said bore (40). The deforming member (90) includes a radially extending member (94) which has an axially extending portion (95) that encircles interior ends (52, 62) of the sleeve (50) and piston (60).

  • Patent number: 4587888
Abstract: A fluid pressure actuated piston (78) is slidably carried in a fluid pressure actuated cylinder (50) which, in turn, is slidably carried in a fixed carrier or casing (21). Movement of the cylinder (50) is resisted by a breakable or displaceable coupler (90, 94, 184, 185) which engages the cylinder (50). Fluid pressure acting upon the cylinder (50) and piston (78) causes the coupler (90, 94, 184, 185) to break or be displaced and release the cylinder (50) for axial movement in the direction of movement of the pressure responsive piston (78).

  • Patent number: 4129202
Abstract: In an aircraft multiple disc brake assembly, an excessive total brake torque can be experienced during favorable, dry, conditions. To limit the brake torque to a predetermined maximum, the plurality of conventional brake piston assemblies are modified to provide a pressure responsive surface area which is in an opposing relationship to the braking force. When a predetermined amount of braking torque is experienced, conventional electronics employing strain gauge sensors control a solenoid valve to vent pressurized brake fluid to the opposing surface area thereby reducing the braking force and limiting the total braking torque experienced by the brake assembly to a predetermined maximum amount. The brake pressure is not affected by this system.

  • Patent number: 3995721
Abstract: An extensible cylinder slidably containing a fluid pressure actuated piston is provided with differential first and second area portions exposed to a piston actuating pressurized fluid and an opposing pressurized fluid which opposing fluid is pressurized by a fluid pressure amplifier or booster responsive to the piston actuating pressurized fluid to maintain a proportional relationship between the pressures of the piston actuating fluid and opposing fluid to thereby generate a force balance on the cylinder. A stop on the cylinder is engaged by the piston upon completion of the piston stroke in the cylinder causing the cylinder to advance with the piston to thereby extend the stroke of the piston. The volumetric requirement of the piston actuating pressurized fluid for a given displacement of the piston is constant regardless of the position of the extensible cylinder.

  • Patent number: 3983972
Abstract: A rotatable brake or clutch friction disc formed of a material having characteristic strength weakness in tension and shear modes and provided with an annular metal force transmitting member interposed between the disc and fixed or rotatable portions of the brake or clutch. The annular metal force transmitting member has a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart radially extending key engaging slots or slot engaging keys. The annular metal force transmitting member may be provided with opposite radially extending annular metal shields which slidably engage similar shields on adjacent discs to provide a barrier tending to minimize air flow to and thus oxidation of a heated friction disc.
