    Abstract: A method of preparing a metal alloy product from a powder blend. The method comprising: (a) cold pressing a blend to form a compact, the metal blend comprising a metal powder phase and at least one reinforcement phase having a hardness greater than the metal phase; (b) heating the compact to form a preheated compact; and (c) hot working the heated compact. In a preferred method, the powder metal blend comprises 50 to 90 vol. % of an aluminum alloy powder and 10 to 50 vol. % of silicon carbide; the heating of the compact perforated in a nitrogen atmosphere to form a preheated compact; and the extruded hot compact is hot worked. Hot working may take the form of forging, rolling, upset forging, exuding, compacting or other processes known in the art.

    Abstract: An alloy product having improved combinations of strength, density, toughness and corrosion resistance, said alloy product consisting essentially of about 7.6 to 8.4% zinc, about 1.8 to 2.2% magnesium, about 2 to 2.6% copper and at least one element selected from zirconium, vanadium and hafnium present in a total amount not exceeding about 0.5%, preferably about 0.05 to 0.25% zirconium, the balance aluminum and incidential elements and impurities. The alloy product, suitable for aerospace applications, exhibits high yield strength, at least about 10% greater yield strength than its 7X50-T6 counterpart, with good toughness and corrosion resistance properties typically comparable to or better than those of its 7X50-T76 counterpart. Upper wing members made from this alloy typically have a yield strength over 84 ksi, good fracture toughness and an EXCO exfoliation resistance level of "EC" or better, typically "EB".

The product comprises 2.2 to 3.0 wt. % Li, 0.4 to 2.0 wt. % Mg, 0.2 to 1.6 wt. % Cu, 0 to 2.0 wt. % Mn, 0.5 wt. % max. Fe, 0.5 wt. % max. Si, the balance aluminum and incidental impurities and has the ability to develop improved combinations of strength and toughness in response to an aging treatment. Prior to an aging step, the product having imparted thereto a working effect equivalent to stretching so that after an aging step it has improved combinations of strength and toughness.

The alloy body may be homogenized at a temperature in the range of 900.degree. to 1100.degree. F. and thereafter worked into a wrought product such as sheet which may be continuously solution heat treated and quenched and aged to a T4 condition prior to forming into vehicular panel members, for example.

The product has imparted thereto, prior to an aging step, a working effect equivalent to stretching an amount greater than 3% in order that, after said aging, improved strength and fracture toughness combinations are obtained.
