  • Patent number: 5303592
Abstract: An inspection head for continuous acoustic energy inspection of coiled tubing consisting of a generally cylindrical test head for receiving the tubing longitudinally therethrough while being sealed on each end to maintain fluid couplant circulation. A cylindrical test array is disposed within the head to receive the tubing while directing a plurality of radially aligned compressional wave acoustic sensors and single in-line, angularly oriented shear wave acoustic sensors. Analysis of the various signal returns enables derivation of ovality, inside wall pitting, outside wall pitting, wall thickness, and transverse and/or longitudinal flaws.

  • Patent number: 4541064
Abstract: A method for ultrasonic flaw inspection of non-rotating tubular goods using microprocessor central control. The system includes a test head with circumferential arrays of transducers oriented for inspection for each of transverse, longitudinal and wall thickness defects, and the test head includes individual pulser and pre-amplifier arrays as sequentially controlled from a remotely disposed operator console. The console includes signal processing circuitry and sequence controller for developing and displaying defect indications for the test specimen as it is moved longitudinally through the test head. The sequence controller contains resident program for addressably controlling the operational sequence of selected transducer pulsing, return signal reception, gate discrimination, and flaw signal averaging to provide qualified flaw output indication for each of the transverse, longitudinal and wall thickness testing modes.

The apparatus includes a test head with circumferential arrays of transducers oriented for inspection for each of transverse, longitudinal and wall thickness defects, and the test head includes individual pulser and pre-amplifier arrays as sequentially controlled from a remotely disposed operator console. The console includes sequential signal processing circuitry for developing and displaying defect indications for the test specimen as it is moved longitudinally through the test head. The signal processing circuitry includes separate processing channels for each of the transverse, longitudinal and wall thickness transducers, and each channel includes receiver, gate processing and average counter circuitry which develop data signals for output to selected chart and monitor scope indicators.

  • Patent number: 4404853
Abstract: Method and apparatus for ultrasonic testing of tubular goods wherein plural circumferential arrays are utilized for continuous testing for specifically oriented defects. The apparatus utilizes plural ultrasonic energy transducers disposed in circumferential array for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic energy toward a central bore area. Further support structure serves to dispose the tubular goods in the central bore area for movement relative to said plural ultrasonic energy transducers while fluid enclosure means, also including a central bore area as defined by a slidable seal, maintains a fluid environment between each of the plural ultrasonic energy transducers and the tubular goods. The plural ultrasonic transducers are then repetitively energized and received energy variations due to discontinuities in said elongate goods are then output as an indication of quality.
