  • Publication number: 20020063896
Abstract: An electronic reprographic system and method are provided that extend the functionality of reprographic systems. The system includes an input system for converting contents of a multi-page document to a plurality of digital representations in a storage system, a processing system that generates processed digital representations in the storage system, a user interface for posting document integrity messages to a user and inputting user responses to the messages, and an output system for outputting the processed digital representations. The processing system includes a character recognition module, a reference number locator module, a page sequence integrity determinator module, a page insertion module, a page deletion module and a page reordering module. The aforementioned reference number can be a page number, column number or line number, each of which can be in any common format such as Roman numeral and alphanumeric.

  • Patent number: 4967233
Abstract: In an input scanner provided with a document input, a sheet feeding path for transporting documents to a scanning station and to a document output; a scanning station having at least a first scanning element, normally fixed in position relative to the sheet feeding path, and supporting a full width array of photosensitive sensors with a coresponding optical arrangement for directing light from the document to the sensors, there is provided an arrangement for bringing the optical arrangement and sensors of the scanning element to a calibration sensing position for detection of a calibration target provided in a fixed position within the input scanner, while retaining the scanning element at a fixed position relative to the sheet feeding path.

  • Patent number: 4684237
Abstract: A scanning system for an electrophotographic printing machine is adapted to alleviate the problem of platen overheating when the machine is operated in a mode wherein documents are stream-fed past an exposure zone formed by a stationary scan/illumination assembly. The scanning system includes a scan/illumination assembly which moves beneath a stationary platen during a first, copying mode. When the mode of operation changes and the documents are stream-fed along the platen surface, the illumination/scan assembly is held stationary during each exposure cycle but is periodically moved to new positions during subsequent exposure cycles. A system controller monitors the stream-fed mode of operation and adjusts system timing and registration functions to compensate for the alternate scan/illumination exposure positions.

  • Patent number: 4647184
Abstract: An automated process and apparatus is provided for establishing the basic xerographic operating parameters for an electrophotographic printing machine. The document scanning means is used in a setup mode to generate test patches of varying density on the machine photoreceptor. The levels are measured and compared to present values stored in a digital controller memory until convergence is obtained along three separate points on the PIDC curve. The controller adjusts the system parameters of charge circuit, developer bias and system exposure in an iterative process and corresponding to the photo-induced discharge curve for the particular machine.

  • Patent number: 4627721
Abstract: The present invention is concerned with the automatic adjustment of the optical components in an optical scanning system after the tech rep has visually inspected sample copies with a test pattern and entered adjustment numbers at the control console. The control determines the optimum relative position of the optical components for a focus and various magnification ratios and stores these relationships as reference numbers in memory for reference at the selected magnification ratios. These reference numbers can be altered as future copies are inspected by the tech rep and appropriate evaluation numbers are entered into the control. In a specific embodiment, one sample copy is compared by the tech rep with the test pattern to adjust the magnification setting and a sequence of five set copies are produced to coarse adjust and fine adjust focus.

  • Patent number: 4618248
Abstract: An electrophotographic printing machine utilizing an optical illumination and scanning system which, besides performing the conventional document reproducing function, is adapted to operate in a machine test mode. In the test mode, target strips of varying density affixed to the bottom of a platen are projected as test patch images onto the surface of a photoreceptor. The voltage levels of these patches are then measured and used to adjust variable parameters to maintain optimum operation. The optical system, when operating in the test mode, sequentially and selectively illuminates various of the test patches while control means selectively varies the illumination levels.

  • Patent number: 4555621
Abstract: An illumination detector is positioned adjacent one surface of a wedge-shaped light pipe which is optically coupled to a mirror in a scanning system. The light coupled into the light pipe is representative of the illumination reflected from a document scanning plane, yet is totally internally reflected from the angled surface of the light pipe to produce a uniform, integrated illumination level at the photosensor. This photosensor output represents an exposure level used to adjust the output of a document illumination power supply.
