  • Publication number: 20190312255
Abstract: A negative electrode for an electrochemical cell of a lithium metal battery may be manufactured by welding together a lithium metal layer and a metallic current collector layer. The lithium metal layer and the current collector layer may be arranged adjacent one another and in an at least partially lapped configuration such that faying surfaces of the layers confront one another and establish a faying interface therebetween at a weld site. A laser beam may be directed at an outer surface of the current collector layer at the weld site to melt a portion of the lithium metal layer adjacent the faying surface of the current collector layer and produce a lithium metal molten weld pool. The laser beam may be terminated to solidify the molten weld pool into a solid weld joint that physically bonds the lithium metal layer and the current collector layer together at the weld site.

  • Publication number: 20190064277
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for evaluating a battery cell. The battery cell may include a hermetically sealed outer casing, a plurality of electrically conductive components enclosed within the outer casing, an electrically conductive terminal having a proximal end that extends within the outer casing and a distal end that extends in a longitudinal direction relative to the battery cell outside the outer casing, and a solid electrical and mechanical joint formed between one or more of the electrically conductive components and the proximal end of the electrically conductive terminal. Evaluation of the battery cell may include measuring the impedance of the battery cell while applying a longitudinal pulling force or a transverse bending force to the electrically conductive terminal and the solid electrical and mechanical joint.

  • Publication number: 20180313790
Abstract: An apparatus for in-situ monitoring of a welded joint in a workpiece includes an ultrasonic sending transducer and a receiving transducer. The ultrasonic sending transducer includes a probe head disposed on a plurality of individually-activatable piezoelectric elements, and a plurality of waveguide probes projecting orthogonally from a planar surface. A wave attenuator is disposed between individual ones of the waveguide probes. A receiving transducer is disposed therein. The workpiece is insertable between the waveguide probes of the ultrasonic sending transducer and the receiving transducer. The ultrasonic sending transducer urges the probe head towards the receiving transducer such that the waveguide probes physically contact the welded joint in the workpiece. The piezoelectric elements individually excite the waveguide probe that is in physical contact with the welded joint in the workpiece. The acoustic receiving transducer is disposed to monitor the welded joint in the workpiece.

  • Publication number: 20070239363
Abstract: A method for making an infeasible sequence of things feasible. The method includes generating a series of matrices that define the relative position of the things in the sequence based on graph theory, and multiplying the matrices to determine the required order of the things in the sequence based on prior pre-determined constraints. The method selects a current position for each thing in the sequence, and looks at each thing before the current position of a thing on a sequential basis to determine whether the thing at the current position should come before any of the previous things based on the multiplied matrices. The method also looks at other constraints, including determining if any of the things must follow each other in the sequence, determining whether any of the things in the sequence cannot follow one after the other, etc.

  • Publication number: 20070239362
Abstract: A method for optimizing a sequence of things that employs a fictitious play algorithm. The method includes assigning an agent to each thing in the sequence, and defining an objective function that is a function of certain performance indices of the things. The method also includes determining an initial sequence of the things, and defining a random sample of a plurality of past sequence of the things. The method then sequentially and independently selects an optimal position for each thing in the sequence that minimizes the objective function relative to the sampled sequences. The method then determines a new sequence of the things based on the selected positions of the things in the sequence, and then determines whether the new sequence is closer to optimal than the previous sequences of the things.

  • Patent number: 7091134
Abstract: In one embodiment, an integrated circuit (IC) fabrication material is dispensed from a print head by dividing its nozzles into several groups, and sequentially allowing each group to fire. The nozzles may be grouped based on the amounts of material they dispense. For example, the nozzles may be grouped by drop volume or drop mass. In one embodiment, an IC fabrication material is dispensed on a substrate by controlling a firing sequence of a nozzle to promote merging of material on the substrate. The firing sequence may also be altered to take into account the firing sequence of adjacent nozzles.

  • Publication number: 20050284204
Abstract: Various embodiments of roller hemming apparatus and methods are disclosed including one wherein multiple rollers are carried on a single mount to hem a flange in a single pass, another including induction heating and air quenching means movable with a roller to anneal the flange just prior to hem forming, and another in which friction from a rotatably driven roller heats the flange to reduce bending stresses during hemming of the flange.
