  • Patent number: 4598798
Abstract: A sliding guide that follows the rail in an elevator consists of a guide shoe made of low friction, durable material which is mounted in a shoe retainer. The shoe retainer, in turn, is mounted in an elastomeric pad which is mounted in a bracket that is connectable to the elevator car. The rigidity of the elastomeric pad is adjustable in discrete steps by adding rigid material to the pad. The retainer is adapted to connect with more than one pad. The retainer may, therefore, be attached to two pads, and the rigidity of both of these pads is adjustable.

  • Patent number: 4556155
Abstract: A flywheel or disc rotates around a circular stationary surface, for example, a shaft, the disc is configured relative to the stationary surface so as to define the tapered area or gap at diametrically opposite positions. Two flyweights that are mounted on the disc and mechanically interconnected pivot on the disc radially outward as the disc speed increases. A pair of rollers are located in the space between the disc and the stationary surface, and, as the weights move radially outward, are progressively forced into the tapered area or gap, eventually contacting the stationary surface where they are wedged in the gap, abruptly stopping the rotation of the disc. The counterweights' center of masses and the pivot points are such that the centrifugal force of one weight is slightly greater than the other. An overspeed switch is operated by the weights at a certain speed.

  • Patent number: 4538706
Abstract: A safety device for stopping an elevator car or counterweight has a brake shoe on one side of a guide rail, and, on the other side, two leaf springs and a roller. The springs define a tapered area, and the roller is pulled by a governor to engage the rail, which trips the roller, causing it to be forced into the tapered area and forcing the brake shoe against the rail. The roller engages a soft metal stop when the device is operated and this stop is worn away during each operation, which permits the roller to move higher on each operation; this compensates for any wear on the brake shoe. The governor is attached to the car or counterweight.

  • Patent number: 4512444
Abstract: A plate is attached to a rail which moves vertically in a housing. The housing includes a brake which rubs on one side of the rail; on the other side, there is a roller. A leaf spring is positioned between the housing and the roller. When the rail moves vertically in one direction, the roller is pushed progressively harder against the rail. This squeezes the rail against the brake, creating a braking force on the rail that increases, to maximum, in relation to distance the rail moves. This arrangement may be used as a buffer for an elevator cab or counterweight in an elevator.
