  • Patent number: 5042822
Abstract: A seal for closing the radial space between two coaxial, radially spaced, relatively rotatable parts. Each of an axially inner and an axially outer sealing ring comprises an approximately L-shaped metal part having sealing lips of elastic plastic material arranged on it. The axially outer sealing ring seated on the radially inward part has a first sealing lip which faces either the interior of the radially outward part or the axial leg of the axially inner sealing ring. To prevent contamination of that first sealing lip, the outer sealing ring has an obliquely outwardly directed fling lip which is radially inward of the first sealing lip and extends approximately into the region of a plane determined either by the axially outer front surface of the axially outwardly extending leg of the inner sealing ring or of the radially outward part. The first sealing lip may also have an obliquely outwardly directed extension located radially inwardly of and extending axially outward of the first sealing lip.

  • Patent number: 5005992
Abstract: A seal structure is disclosed in which self-aligning bearings have flanges fastened to respective ends of the inner and outer rings. The flanges overlap with an annular gap between them. A sealing ring having two sealing lips is fixed to one of the flanges. The other flange has an axially extending portion which is concentric with the axis of the bearing and has a spherical outer surface. In one embodiment, one sealing lip extends across the gap and presses against the spherically curved surface. This sealing lip remains sealed to the outer surface even when the bearing rings swing out of alignment with one another. The second sealing lip rests against an approximately radial portion of one of the flanges to improve the sealing action. A second embodiment contains an additional third sealing lip, which is obliquely inclined toward the spherically curved portion of the flange.

  • Patent number: 4890940
Abstract: A magnetic liquid sealing ring installed in an antifriction bearing between the outer and the inner rings is an integral structure comprised of a sealing ring, which is engaged in the bearing outer ring, and of a pre-seal at the axial inside of the sealing ring. Magnetic liquid elements are supported radially inward of the sealing ring by a magnet in the sealing ring. The pre-seal has an annular groove opening toward the bearing inner ring for holding escaping liquid. An axially outwardly facing shoulder formed on the bearing inner ring raceway cooperates with an axially inwardly facing inside of the pre-seal for defining a slot between them and those surfaces are inclined obliquely to the rolling elements and to the axis of the bearing.

  • Patent number: 4789252
Abstract: A bearing has an outer ring that has an axially outward edge. The inner ring of the bearing has a flange that extends radially outward past the outer edge of the outer ring and defines a slot between them. The external surface of the outer ring is inclined radially inwardly moving axially inwardly from the outer edge of the outer ring for defining a conical section terminating in a circumferential groove. Internally, the outer ring has a borehole in from the outer edge which is also radially inwardly inclined moving axially inward from the outer edge. The outward surface incline directs water away from the slot. The inward surface incline directs water between the rings outward through the slot. The single inclined surface on the exterior of the outer ring may be replaced with a series of inclined surfaces giving the exterior a toothed appearance. A seal may be disposed internally between the outer and inner rings.

  • Patent number: 4772138
Abstract: A sealed antifriction bearing with an inner and outer ring and rolling elements between them includes sealing rings at both axial ends of the annular space between the rings. A sealing ring is fixed to the outer ring and rotates with it. At the inner ring, the sealing ring has a resilient sealing lip with a sealing edge adjacent the inner ring. Projections from the sealing lip project toward the inner ring and are wedge shaped and oriented such that relative rotation of the outer and inner rings causes the projections to convey lubricating oil axially into the annular space between the bearing rings. The sealing lip has a less inclined surface axially inward of the sealing edge and a more sharply inclined surface outward of the sealing edge. The projections are on the sealing lip surface axially inward of the sealing edge.

  • Patent number: 4695062
Abstract: An arrangement for sealing a space having therein rotating means, such as a roller bearing, is provided with sealing rings that are spaced along a rotational axis. The inner annular sealing edges of the sealing rings are biased to engage and seal in against seats that are moving relative to the sealing edges. The seats and sealing edges are disposed so that one or the other of the latter lifts off of its seat to permit pressure within the space to equalize automatically with ambient pressure whether the latter rises or falls relative to pressure within the space.

  • Patent number: 4650195
Abstract: A seal for an anti-friction bearing, which bearing includes an outer and inner ring and rolling elements riding between them. At the inner ring, the seal includes an axially outwardly extending leg or membrane, the radially inward side of which carries two axially spaced apart sealing ridges which are resiliently biased against the inner ring for effecting a seal. In the above axial membrane, there is an additional membrane of smaller cross section formed by a radial constriction of that axial membrane between the two sealing ridges, which makes the support of the axially outward sealing ridge more flexible. The distance between the sealing ridges is at least equal to the axial clearance in the completed installed bearing.

  • Patent number: 4614446
Abstract: A fastening device for the rollers of a roller bushing, such as a universal joint bushing. The roller bushing includes a pin, an outer bushing around and spaced from the pin and rollers between the pin and the outer bushing. A groove in the outer bushing receives a holding ring which is generally U shaped. The groove in the outer bushing is shaped for receiving the radially outer leg of the holding ring under tension. The radially inner leg of the holding ring has projections which cooperate with projections on an outer seal for snap-holding the outer seal to close off the space between the pin and the bushing. The radially-directed, axially inwardly facing surface of the transition leg of the holding ring rests against the axially inward surface of the groove. Further, an inner sealing element for the space between the pin and the outer bushing rests against that same surface of the transition leg of the holding ring.

  • Patent number: 4376541
Abstract: A seal assembly engages between at least one body having an outwardly directed cylindrically annular surface centered on an axis and an annular and planar surface perpendicular to and centered on the axis and another body having an inwardly directed cylindrically annular surface centered on the axis. The seal assembly has a rigid C-section support ring fixed to the inwardly directed surface and open axially toward the planar surface, an elastomeric radial ring seal having an outer periphery vulcanized to the support ring and an inner periphery radially inwardly engaging the outwardly directed surface, and an elastomeric axial ring seal received in the support ring and engaging axially against the planar surface. Such a seal assembly is extremely compact so that it can be provided right in a roller bearing without substantially increasing its size. The radial seal can lie within the radial projection of the axial seal to give the arrangement a very short axial length.
