Patent number: 8893872Abstract: A conveyor roller includes a roller body that defines a fill cavity. A concrete material at least partially fills the fill cavity in the roller body. A bearing assembly is coupled to the roller body. The bearing assembly is configured to facilitate rotation of the roller body. The roller body acts as a mold to allow curing of the concrete material to occur even after final assembly of the conveyor roller. In one example of the manufacturing method, the concrete material is poured into one or more fill cavities inside the roller body, and bearing assemblies are attached to the opposite ends of the roller body. The concrete material can continue to cure even after the bearing assemblies are attached. In one example, the bearing assemblies act as plugs, thereby sealing the concrete material within the fill cavities of the roller body.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2012Date of Patent: November 25, 2014Assignee: Bastian Solutions, LLCInventors: William A. Patent number: 8881526Abstract: A steam turbine system uses a laser to instantaneously vaporize water in a nozzle within a turbine. This steam is then used to rotate the turbine. Thus, the turbine system does not require an external boiler. The steam turbine system may be used in either an open system, where the steam passing through the turbine is not condensed and reused, or a closed system, where the steam passing through the turbine is condensed and reused.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2011Date of Patent: November 11, 2014Assignee: Bastian Family Holdings, Inc.Inventors: William A. Patent number: 8882432Abstract: A robotic automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) mixed pallet build system includes a rack that includes two or more verticals levels upon which items are stored. The system includes a three-dimensional robotic AS/RS that includes a carriage, robot arm, vertical lift, and horizontal propulsion system. The items from the rack are loaded upon the carriage to create a pallet. The robot arm is configured to stack the items from the racks onto the pallet. The vertical lift is configured to move the carriage vertically between the vertical levels of the racks. The horizontal propulsion system is configured to move the carriage horizontally along the rack so that the carriage is able to service the entire length of the rack. The three-dimensional robotic AS/RS also includes a stretch wrapper that progressively secures the layers of items on the pallet to prevent the items from falling off the pallet.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2013Date of Patent: November 11, 2014Assignee: Bastian Solutions, LLCInventors: William A. Publication number: 20140257555Abstract: An autonomous robotic transport system has been developed in which the individual robot vehicles are able to move in multiple directions, such as vertically as well as around curves. Through the use of a unique rail system, the vehicle is able to move around corners and turns without the need for expensive modifications. This eliminates the need for various differentials or multiple electric motors to provide the difference between inner and outer wheels in a turn. Moreover, a number of switches have been developed that allow the vehicles to move not only vertically but also horizontally as well as transition between vertical and horizontal movement. A technique for operating the robotic vehicles is also described.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 8, 2013Publication date: September 11, 2014Inventors: William A. Bastian, II, Britt Calloway, Eric C. Patent number: 8403614Abstract: A robotic automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) mixed pallet build system includes a rack that includes two or more verticals levels upon which items are stored. The mixed pallet build system further includes a three-dimensional robotic AS/RS that includes a carriage, robot arm, vertical lift, and horizontal propulsion system. The items from the rack are loaded upon the carriage to create a pallet. The carriage has a length that is shorter than the length of the rack. The robot arm is configured to stack the items from the racks onto the pallet. The vertical lift is configured to move the carriage vertically between the vertical levels of the racks. Patent number: 8397897Abstract: A vertical storage rack system includes a vertically moveable transport conveyor and one or more vertical feed conveyors that vertically extend between the various rack levels so that items can be loaded and/or unloaded at any of the levels without the need for the vertically moveable transport to return to a loading/unloading level. This vertical rack system can be used to load and unload items from the racks as well as rearrange items in the racks. This system and technique allows items to be continuously moved in a vertical direction as well as sorts or merges the items at high speeds. In other words, this arrangement minimizes the vertical positioning of the vertically moveable transport conveyor, such as a cross-belt conveyor, before it can discharge (and/or load) items, thereby improving throughput.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2010Date of Patent: March 19, 2013Assignee: Bastian Solutions, LLCInventors: William A. Bastian, II, Elizabeth Sobota

Patent number: 8276739Abstract: Individual items or multiple items are stored on vertical stacks (or racks) of conveyors. The stacks of conveyors are located on both sides of a vertical transport on which cartons, totes, and/or pallets are loaded. The vertical transport is able to be vertically lifted in a fashion similar to an elevator so that the totes on the conveyor can receive items from the various levels of the storage rack conveyors. To speed up the loading process, items can be loaded in the containers simultaneously from both sides of the container and/or sequentially. In one form, a cross-belt conveyor is used to load the items. Alternatively or additionally, robotic arms can be used to load the items. One or more conveyor drivers can be used to power multiple conveyors in order to index items to a loading position on the conveyors.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2007Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: Bastian Material Handling, LLCInventors: William A. Patent number: 7262685Abstract: A pick/put to display (PTD) device includes an image display that allows the PTD device to display images related to a product, such as a picture of the product, a barcode or an instructional video. By having the capability to display images of the product, the PTD device is able to reduce the risk that the wrong product will be picked or placed in a storage location. Multiple barcodes can be scanned rapidly without the need to re-aim the scanner. The image display further allows the PTD device to display arrows that can point in a multitude of directions. With the capability of having arrows point in numerous directions, a single PTD device is able to service multiple storage locations, thereby reducing the number of PTD devices needed. The PTD device is further capable of downloading and playing sound files for a product so that audio instructions or alerts can be played.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2004Date of Patent: August 28, 2007Assignee: ASAP Automation, LLCInventor: William A. Patent number: 6650225Abstract: A directed inventory system uses individual wireless pick-to modules, or individual wireless pick-from modules, or both, to aid inventory management services such as order fulfillment. Modules wirelessly receive servicing information directly from a processing computer, and transmit servicing status information directly to the computer. Light indicators or display panels on the modules provide information corresponding to a service to be performed, such as a quantity of parts to be picked from a bin, a location of a parts bin to pick from, a designation of a container to pick into, or other servicing information.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2000Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Assignee: ASAP Automation, LLCInventors: William A.
