  • Patent number: 5426827
Abstract: A tensioning member for achieving and maintaining a desired tension in a flexible strap, web or belt is provided. The tensioning member includes an elongate tensioning member having a pair of cam-like cross-members around which the strap is threaded. The elongate member is rotatable through substantially 180.degree. of arc from a release position to a tensioned position. In the tensioned position, the path of the strap through the tensioning member is longer than when the tensioning member is in the release position. This causes the tension in the strap to increase as the tensioning member is rotated from a release position to the tensioned position. One end of the tensioning member is extended to provide a mechanical advantage for rotating the member to the tensioned position. A keeper or retainer encircling the strap and movable therealong engages the extended end of the tensioning member to secure the tensioning member in the tensioned position.

  • Patent number: 5383589
Abstract: A carrier system for carrying elongate articles, such as skis and poles, on the exterior of an automobile includes a pair of separate, compact base members. Each base member includes three suction cups arranged in a triangular, three-point configuration for engaging the exterior of the automobile and further includes a flexible strap extending from side to side between the rain gutters of the vehicle. Each strap includes a cam-like tensioning member that, when rotated, significantly increases the tension in each strap. The base members are mounted one ahead of the other on the roof of the vehicle. A plurality of clips or other article-engaging members are detatchably mounted to the base members for engaging the articles to be carried. Different types of article engaging members are provided for carrying different types of loads. In one embodiment, each base member includes a pair of built-in load stops for carrying loads therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4783884
Abstract: An improved knob for attachment to a lever or the like having a knob body with a cavity formed therein, an extension operatively attached to the body and being biased toward the cavity. Operatively attached to the extension is a projection for engaging a mating portion on the lever and a tapered portion for enabling the knob to be easily removed from the lever. The preferred knob has the extension connected to the knob body so that the extension does not project very far below the cavity entrance. The knob of the present invention is preferably manufactured by injection molding in a single step operation. Once cured, the knob is removed from the mold in condition for assembly on an appropriate lever or the like. To effectuate assembly, an assembler simply places the knob on the lever or the like until the projection engages a mating portion thereof.
