Patent number: 6358460Abstract: Methods are disclosed for producing multi-layer peelable sheaths having formed tips, for use as medical introducer devices, e.g., sheaths for inserting a catheter or the like into a patient. The methods include the steps of preparing a first composition blend for forming an inner layer of the multi-layer sheath, preparing a second composition blend for forming an outermost layer of the multi-layer sheath, combining the first and the second composition blends into a multi-layer pre-form, processing the multi-layer pre-form for producing tubing, and forming a tip at one end of the tubing using a thermal process, thereby producing the multi-layer sheath having the inner layer, the outermost layer, and the formed tip. The methods of the present invention include adding a detectable material to the blend used for making the inner layer for facilitating external visualization of the multi-layer sheath, thereby achieving a sheath with a formed tip having no visible discoloration.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1999Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: TFX Medical IncorporationInventors: William E. Patent number: 6226751Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for establishing a virtual private network that operates over a public data network. One embodiment of the present invention includes a system that selects a plurality of entities coupled to the public data network to include in the virtual private network. The system next assembles a plurality of identifiers for the plurality of entities. These identifiers are used to identify communications between the plurality of entities, so that these communications can be transferred securely over the public data network. A variation on this embodiment includes defining encryption, authentication and compression parameters for the virtual private network. In another variation, selecting the plurality of entities includes, assembling entities coupled to the public data network into groups, and selecting groups of entities to include in the virtual private network.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1998Date of Patent: May 1, 2001Assignee: VPNet Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Leslie J. Arrow, Henk J. Bots, Mark R. Hoke, William E. Hunt, Russell C. Jones, Quentin C. Liu

Patent number: 6175917Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a computer system with a plurality of storage memories, each storage memory storing an operating system program, and an identifier for identifying a storage memory containing an operating system program to be loaded when the unit is booted. The identifier is selectively switchable between storage memories so that the computer system may be selectively booted with an alternate operating system program. This facilitates loading a new version of an operating system, and then rapidly switching back to an old version of the operating system if the new version fails to function properly.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1998Date of Patent: January 16, 2001Assignee: VPNet Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Leslie J. Patent number: 6154839Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention includes a system that translates addresses in a data packet based upon a user identifier in the data packet. The system receives the data packet sent from a source node to a destination node by a user. This data packet includes a source address of the source node, a destination address of the destination node and the user identifier that identifies the user. The system uses the user identifier to look up communication privileges associated with the user. If the communication privileges allow the user to communicate with the destination node, the system replaces the source address in the data packet with a privileged address, and forwards the data packet to the destination node. In a variation on this embodiment, the privileged address is recognized by a system firewall so that it facilitates passage of the packet through firewall.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1998Date of Patent: November 28, 2000Assignee: VPNet Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Leslie J. Arrow, Henk J. Bots, Mark R. Hoke, William E. Hunt, Bruce T. Huntley

Patent number: 5237655Abstract: A raster image processor for an all points addressable printer includes at least three digital computer controlled processing units arranged in a parallel processing pipe line. The first unit is a master processing unit that receives printing instructions and generates rendering commands. The record unit is connected to the first unit by a dedicated bus, and receives the rendering commands over the bus and generates bit maps corresponding to the rendering commands. The third unit is a memory unit connected to the second unit by a second dedicated bus, and receives the bit maps from the second unit and stores them in a page memory. All three units are connected by a communications and control bus for overall coordination of the units.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1990Date of Patent: August 17, 1993Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: David J. Statt, William E. Hunt, Mark R. Warda, Theodore Huthsteiner

Patent number: 5057852Abstract: Apparatus and method of producing image edge enhancement in four-color printers. The true black color is aligned for printing between the cyan, magenta, and yellow colors. When a black edge is desired, process black and true black are both used to produce the pixels along the edge. Because the process and true black pixels are interleaved with each other along the edge, the effective resolution is doubled and the sharpness is enhanced along the edge.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1989Date of Patent: October 15, 1991Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: Joseph F. Formica, William E. Hunt, Thomas R. Knapp, Thomas L. Kowalczyk

Patent number: 5003496Abstract: A raster image processor for an all points addressable marking engine includes a page memory having a data input and a write enable input. Halftone tints are applied to bit maps of objects stored in the page memory by applying a tint bit pattern to the data input of the page memory while a bit pattern representing the object is being applied to the write enable input of the page memory. Prior to applying the object bit maps to the write enable input of the page memory, the object bit maps may be combined with a texture bit pattern or clipped by a window bit pattern.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1988Date of Patent: March 26, 1991Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: William E. Patent number: 4134672Abstract: Copy finisher for assembling uncollated or collated copies produced by an electrographic copies into booklets in an intermediate tray, for stapling the booklets, if desired, and for selectively stacking the booklets in an offset or straight manner in an output tray. If a malfunction, such as a paper jam, occurs in the copier, the finisher will assemble the copies in process in the finisher into a booklet and offset stack the booklet in the output tray. If the number of copies in a copy set produced by the copier exceeds the copy assmebling limit of the intermediate tray, the finishing apparatus will assemble the copies of the set into subbooklets of copies equal to or less than the copy limit of the intermediate tray and stack all of the subbooklets of a copy set at the same location in the output tray.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1977Date of Patent: January 16, 1979Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: Leroy E. Burlew, Michael G. Reid, William E. Hunt

Patent number: 4025186Abstract: Electrophotographic copying apparatus is disclosed having an elongated electrosensitive web defining a plurality of selectable image areas and having a plurality of perforations formed along an edge therein and movable along an endless path relative to a plurality of actuable work stations disposed along the path. The work stations are operative when actuated to perform a work operation on a selected image area of the web, respectively. The apparatus includes means disposed at a fixed location along the path for sensing the perforations to produce signals, a logic and control unit having a programmable computer with a stored program and responsive to such perforation signals for actuating the work stations in accordance with the program to cause the work stations to perform work operations on the web in timed relation to movement of selected image areas along the path respectively.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1975Date of Patent: May 24, 1977Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: William E. Patent number: 3960051Abstract: A breech and latch mechanism is described herein for use in an aircraft mile ejection launching system. The described mechanism is characterized by a fluid actuated piston that rotates a bell crank and link from a hook locking over-center position to a hook retracting position. The piston acts also as a sequencing valve to pass fluid to pressure actuated ejection rams. A pressure fluid distributing orifice structure and a pyrotechnic cartridge igniting firing pin structure are described also.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1974Date of Patent: June 1, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: William E.
