Patent number: 5399018Abstract: A position housing assembly, for a generally cylindrical infra-red thermocouple sensor of the type having a sensing face at one end and one or more electrical conductors extending from the other end, includes a cylindrical housing having a central bore for telescopically receiving a sensor. A conical reflective surface, at one end of the housing, concentrates infra-red rays toward the face of the sensor; the reflective surface may be integral with the housing or it may be carried by a separable adapter. A separable handle attaches to the housing, and extends into the housing wall for guiding conductors from a sensor to the exterior of the housing. A set screw on the housing clamps the sensor within the central bore. Adjustable positioning legs extend axially from the housing to position it relative to a test surface. In one embodiment the legs are attached to a moveable positioning bracket, while in another, the legs slide within axial bores integrally formed in the housing.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1993Date of Patent: March 21, 1995Assignee: Omega Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Milton B. Hollander, William E. McKinley

Patent number: 5306164Abstract: A separable electrical connector with a housing formed of electrically insulating material includes an external grounding terminal anchor positioned in a grounding strip groove on the surface of the housing. The groove, in the form of an open-sided recess, receives and positions a suitably dimensioned grounding strip of electrically conductive material. The strip is coupled to the anchor by a screw fastener which engages mating screw threads formed in the anchor. One or more display surfaces surrounded by upstanding protective wall surfaces are formed on the exterior surface of the housing for the display of identifying indicia, and the base surf ace of the external grounding strip groove may be used as a display surface, if desired, in the absence of a grounding strip. The grounding terminal anchor may be made of electrically conductive material so that an anchored conductive grounding strip will be coupled to the housing both electrically and mechanically.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1993Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Assignee: Omega Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Milton B. Hollander, David R. Jacobs, William E. McKinley, Janice E. Angrave

Patent number: 5183420Abstract: A simple and effective means for improving mechanical resistance to stress at the coupling between a conductor and the connector is provided in a thermocouple connector which includes an integrally attached spool for storing in neat, compact and readily accessible form, the excess length of electrical conductor which is attached to the connector while providing the resistance to the stress.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1991Date of Patent: February 2, 1993Assignee: Omega Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Milton B. Hollander, David R. Jacobs, William E. McKinley

Patent number: 5030614Abstract: A superconducting wire is produced by the surrounding of a superconductive material core with an intermediate compressible insulating layer and an outer malleable layer and then drawing said composite structure through a series of dies to reduce the diameter of the wire on the order of 400 to 10,000 times or by reducing the superconductive core material to the desired wire size by passing it through a series of dies to reduce the diameter of the wire on the order of 400 to 10,000 times and then coating the wire with a noncompressible insulating layer and then placing an outer malleable layer over the insulated wire and drawing this through dies to snuggly fit the outer layer onto the insulated wire. This wire's superconducting characteristics are not intended for carrying high levels of currents so the reduction of the available current carrying cross section by the introduction of the insulating layer is not of concern in the applications for the wire.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1989Date of Patent: July 9, 1991Assignee: Omega Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Milton B. Hollander, William E. McKinley

Patent number: 5019838Abstract: A chart recorder is described for recording parameters such as temperature and humidity on rotating planar charts. Pens, which are used to form traces on a chart as this is rotated, are moved by pen actuators along travel paths that are parallel to a straight radius relative to the axis of chart rotation. The pen actuators are electrically moved under the control of a microprocessor to positions as determined by representative of parameter values. Various mechanical and electrical control features are described whereby pen motions are caused intermittently so as to preserve battery power and achieve long term portable operation.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1988Date of Patent: May 28, 1991Assignee: Omega Engineering, Inc.Inventors: William E. McKinley, James P. Crimmins, Robert G. Russell

Patent number: 4949274Abstract: Test meters, particularly of the type employed for testing electrical circuits, e.g. multimeters, are improved in operational efficiency. In one aspect, remote selection of test and/or report format frees the operators hands for concentration on a test piece. In another test results or format information are conveyed as synthesized speech in any of a number of selectable formats. By combining both aspects in a hand-held multimeter, a high degree of interaction between the operator and the meter is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1988Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: Omega Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Milton B. Hollander, William E. McKinley, James P. Crimmins, Ian K. Storer

Patent number: 4808241Abstract: The present invention relates to a rapid response thermocouple probe 10 having a resilient, replaceable thermocouple element 50 probe 10, comprising cylindrical body 20 having housing means 30 at one end, securing means 40 associated with housing means 30 and comprising two securing elements, 40a and 40b, in electrical isolation from each other, and a resilient thermocouple element 50 comprising an arcuate strip of two dissimilar metals joined together, ends, 55 and 57, of thermocouple element 50 being removably secured to securing means 40. The thermocouple probe of this invention eliminates the necessity of discarding the entire probe upon wear or breakage of thermocouple element 50.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1987Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: Omega Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Milton B. Hollander, William E. McKinley

Patent number: 4735661Abstract: The object of this invention is to provide a rapid response thermocouple which is removably affixable to the surface whose temperature is to be measured, and a method of making such a thermocouple. The thermocouple of this invention comprises a thermocouple assembly 24, a first film 10 having an adhesive coating on one side, a second film 50 having an adhesive coating on both sides, a third film 30 and a tab 40, wherein the adhesive coated side of the first film is adhered to one of the adhesive-coated sides of the second film with the thermocouple assembly interposed between them, and further wherein the third film is removably adhered to the remaining adhesive-coated side of the second film with the tab disposed between them so that it partially extends beyond the edges of the second and third films to facilitate removal of the third film from the second film.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1986Date of Patent: April 5, 1988Assignee: Omega Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Milton B. Patent number: 4133700Abstract: 0.degree.COLD JUNCTION COMPENSATOR PROVIDES THE ELECTRICAL EQUIVALENT OF AN ICE-BATH REFERENCE THERMOCOUPLE, AT A SELECTED TEMPERATURE, FOR EXAMPLE O.degree. C. Input connectors, for engagement with conventional thermocouple units, form thermocouple junctions with conductors connected to a battery-operated Wheatstone bridge circuit adapted to supply an equal and opposite voltage output compensating for variations in the thermocouple junction output at different ambient temperatures. The compensator may be included in a module having input sockets or input plugs to coact with plugs or sockets of conventional thermocouple units. The compensator and battery may be encapsulated, or an accessible switch may be included in the battery circuit.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1977Date of Patent: January 9, 1979Assignee: Omega Engineering Inc.Inventors: Betty R.
